Sky Broadband & P2P (Torrent)

I've got Sky 20mb unlimited broadband. Speedtest.net shows me getting around 4.4mb.

When I'm just using the internet for suffering or playing on the PS3 etc, everything is fine.

Over 1 week ago, I tried to download some American TV shows using Bitcomment. The downloads seem to start fine and I was happy as I turned the screen off and went to bed.

When I woke up in the moring, I went to check on the downloads, fully expecting them to have finished. They had infact barely downloaded anything - a few percent and the router had disconnected from the internet. I turned it off and back on and my internet connection returned.

A few days later, I tried again and the same thing happened. I find that my router is disconnected from the internet and I can't even get to the google homepage.

Late Saturday afternoon, I thought I'd try again and watch what's happening. I started to download and the speeds went up to 80kbp. Then within the minute, they dropped slowly down and then stopped. My router's light is still green but I can't access the internet. It then goes orange (showing it's not connected) and I have to turn it off and on again to get it working.

Does anyone know what's going on? Similar problems? Or do Sky ban any use of P2P? It's not even a throttle on speed, it seems like a complete no go. Pretty bloody annoying considering I'm paying for unlimited download and the damn company doesn't even allow me to download a few mega bites. This is just the latest ball ache I've had with Sky - tottaly inept service :(

I have been having similar problems with Sky broadband.

Intermittent connection for a couple of days and then orange light on instead of green for the internet connection.

After speaking to Sky for a hour last night, they are sending me a new router. I currently have the black netgear sky one.

What port is your torrent service running on, is it free? have you forwarded-ed-ed it on your router?

Yes some ISPs attempt to block it, but this can be bypassed.

I have no idea what that means, but the word free is correct, I don't pay to use the P2P software.

I'm on sky, and although i have to say my connection has been awful for the last couple of weeks, it does not seem to be connected to my use of p2p. Might be worth having a check over your cables and checking in the config of your router for its connected up and downstream connection speed.

The cables are fine - I'll check the config tonight then.

I presume I have the latest router as I only got it not long ago. It's a Sagem one, looks extremely cheap and the wireless signal is v.poor.

On serious note try newsgroups.... you could try it out over 3 day trial for free and you wont go back.

Your internet connection max'd out every time. :D always get what you want and expect as well.

If your interested ill do some instructions for you its easy enough nowadays.

Also what router you got, I had 4.4mb with o2; custom firmware in my netgear router and i now have 7.5mb :D
