Suspension Knocking (with vid)

Well, a bit angry at the moment. Will start from the start...

 

Was going to order new wheel bearings for the spare hubs i'd bought, but after speaking to Paul Whiffin about how tight the hub nuts are meant to be I set off finding the proper torque setting just in case. 213ft/lbs!!! Jesus. I'd tried to get them quite tight before but not that tight, so I set about it. Turns out my 32mm socket wasn't deep enough and was fouling on the edge of the driveshaft making me think they were tighter than they were. So tightened the crap out of them with a deep set 32mm, maxed my 150ftlbs torque wrench then gave it some more on the breaker bar. I'd say this has fixed about 50% of the noise.

 

So MOT is due, I put it in, it comes back with play in the toe adjustment arms. Bollocks, I say, they've only been on there a year and they were brand new! Right enough I just jacked up the car and can see them jiggling about. The bolts are still tight and not moving but the arms moving back and forth visibly. WTF. How could these deteriorate in a year with about 4000 miles driving? They're a year and a few months old, if I hadn't waited months to fit them I could possibly get them sorted under the std 12 months warranty for parts but not now.

 

I don't understand how these could have developed play in such a short space of time? Is that even possible? Somehow taking extra load because the hub nut wasn't tightened properly? Anyway I was hoping to drive the Supra about 4-5 hours drive up to Wick on saturday but I don't think i'm going to be able to source new arms and get it MOT'd again in time so i'll have to take my bloody 1.2L Ibiza.

 

So... the mystery of the knocking SHOULD be solved once I sort this. I'm about to take the arms off the car to have a look and see what's going on. :(

Took one side off for a look, looks alright, tightened the other side now no play AT ALL in any direction in the wheel. I can only assume the metal that the arm is sandwiched between on the subframe was slightly bent out from removing the previous arms and after being torqued up to the required 136ftlbs (as with the hub nut this was under torqued, although this time it isn't my fault because I had the alignment done by someone else after i'd fit the arms :D) it's come back into line.

 

Just re-fitted the side I took off and torqued it up and now it there's no more movement side to side. Hopefully it's as simple as that and it can get an MOT pass tomorrow.

Has all of this stopped the knocking noise?

 

I'll let you know tomorow :) but i'm quietly hopeful!

 

I've got an infuriating knocking from the rear shocks too, and will be binning the KYBs I have on there for some Bilsteins very soon. Shame I can't afford a CW set up.

 

Well make sure it's your shocks first is all I can say! I think CW has a set of Tein Flex for a good price at the moment though.
