Supralad
Well going up towards my local town Chelmsford, pulled off a round-a-bout off the a12 (after bombing at about a ton for a good minute or so) I put my foot down going round a slight corner and the back came out - I thought right better pull off the accelerator, as you do - but the back continued to slide everywhere. Managed to control her and get her back goin straight, look into my rear view mirror and there is a lot of smoking coming from the back. Sh*t. Wat have i done. I thought something had gone in the engine and the exhaust was blowing a lot of smoke out. Get out of the car, look at the exhaust and its fine Thinking what the hell just happened...... then i look at my rear tyre http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash2/hs211.ash2/47383_428188215809_507030809_5571703_6302780_n.jpg I must have been doing about 70mph(ish) so it could have been a lot lot lot worse. Considering i went to the Bluewater meet last nite and was having it on the way back aswell - if this blew last nite it would have been a different story than just changing the tyre over. Anyway luckily there was a bus stop so i pulled over and changed to the spare. Can i ask, im after a 265/35 ZR 18 (continental) and i have been quoted about £260 for a new one. Is this how much they cost or can I (i dont wanna be tight about it but...) change to a cheaper tyre that is just as good quality?
Ian W
I'd make sure it's the same as your other tyre if it's on the rear. If both are worn I'd even go as far as replacing both as you don't want one having a lot more grip than the other. Perhaps get two Falken or Toyo instead? neo2810
Don't mix tyres across the axis. Either buy the same tyre as you have on the other side or replace both with cheaper. Edit: beaten to it
kill1308
Looks like you were pretty lucky! Toyo Proxes T1R are a pretty good tyre in terms of value for money. They are a pretty decent tyre and don't cost the earth... I'm not a huge fan of Falken though I must admit... You can look on http://www.tyrereviews.co.uk/ if you want to look for some others. Scooter
A part worn is an option...........preferable IMO to mismatched tyres
Branners
might just be me, but the wear on that tyre is very odd. The very inner edge looks to be completely worn which means the alignment was way out of kilter. That would have put a lot more load on the inner edge of the tyre and probably caused it to fall apart. I would buy 2 new tyres and get alignment done at the same time to make sure, otherwise you could have a wrecked tyre in a couple thousand miles. Supralad
That's them. Very good VFM. cheers Didnt you get your car from japan recently? or am i thinking of someone else? car was probably sitting for a while for that to happen to the tyre im guessing, all cars coming from japan show have new tyres fitted imo:( glad you and the supra are ok mate:) glad the supra is ok, i wudnt care about me No i didnt, when i bought the car they took the wheels off and changed them over to some alloys that were on a VVTI. I knew they were out of line as the steering wheel was shaking when i went over 80mph. I didnt think it was this bad though. Now im worried about the other back so ill have to buy 2 new tyres. Silly really and my fault as i should have taken it to get sorted ages ago, just got a bit lazy.
Guigsy
were they ditch finders? (forgot the proper name!) newly imported cars always seem to have shitty tyres on them. and probably not rated to 100+ mph? Im also with branners on this. The odd tyre wair could be caused after it blew. but still. 2 new ones and an alignment check. and my 2p... toyo proxies tr1s have given me excelent grip in most conditions. dr_jekyll
452s is a yes . that tyre has been run uder inflated . how often do you check your tyres and make sure all is well , under inflation is the causse of 90% of all tyres failures . its possible you picked something up that night but looking at the extream egde ware id say its been soft for a while. id still get the alignement looked at but from my experience when uneven wear is caused by poor alignement there is a tide mark on the tyre , ( like a wavey dark wear line ) and you can feel rough rubber across the tyre. Bailey.
Get a pair of 452's great tyre imho! That price is crazy expensive!!!
Supralad
I wasnt aware of the tyres being flat at all. The tyre that blew wasnt 'flat' either - obviously hard to get a real reading when the wheel has a gaping hole around the outside of it - but its not as flat as you would expect considering it blew. All the other 3 are fine as i checked them this morning. This was Ian_Ians old car, its been in the country about 5 years. Its just the fact Ian wanted to keep his alloys and the dealer threw some others alloys on to sell the car. Its my fault for not getting it all checked when i bought the car as i knew they were out of line. 2 tyres and wheel alignment check all for £350 will sort me out and stop me worrying this will happen again. Laziness costs......
dr_jekyll
they dont need to be completly flat to go and when a 35 prifile tyr is soft its not verry obvious. if you wer running it at say 20psi , it would look pretty normal but the extra play in the wall causes the ply to get verry hot as the tyre moves. and it gets softter and weaker until that happens.
