tbourner
Where's the cheapest place to get a 50cc moped? I wanted to get the missus on one and sell the Corsa (once it's fixed), but she's not too keen, so I'm thinking I can get one as I can ride it on my car licence and can carry her as pillion!! Not too bothered about quality, just as cheap as chips. If it's got some MOT on it would be nice though. I guess everyone would recommend doing a CBT even though I don't need to (got my licence in 1999)? Even for a moped? How about leathers etc? Coming off at 31MPH would still be pretty nasty if I was only wearing jeans and a t-shirt - but FULL leathers or just a cheap jacket and boots? Mike
I would recommend CBT and a lesson minimum... otherwise you'll get eaten for breakfast! You need to know when to do you mirror checks and 'life saves'... there's some classic mistakes you'll do without the proper training. You probably don't need full leathers, but I would recommend kevlar jeans and strong boots minimum. Also a jacket with some CE armour. It's not cheap if you're going to get the proper gear. Seriously Trev, it's very dangerous and you need to have your wits about you. A 50cc moped is going to be a bit underpowered for one person, never mind two. I would think seriously about this - it could be a bit of a nightmare if you come a cropper. I know you see lots of kids buzzing around on mopeds (particularly on the South Coast), of the few bikers I've chatted to (while training for my full licence) they're widely regarded as organ donors. tbourner
Well I fancied a little 125 traily actually, just that a moped would be easier. It's only a 3mile journey to work and the Corsa doesn't even like it, so if we sold it I'd be stuck as I'm not using the Delica for it! I'd happily cycle but the missus refuses so I need to find another way. I think I can ride a 125 on my car licence after CBT, then do the DAS when I feel like it and get a bigger bike. Doesn't really help with the wife though.

But imo, a 125 will be alot better than a moped. Yes, if you do your CBT you can ride it for a year.
PJ
I'll go with what Mike has said and just add that leathers would be overkill on a moped but I'd definately go for textiles as a bare minimum, and boots/gloves for sure. You will definately seriously struggle two up on a 50cc moped, and I don't think it's legal either. I hate mopeds with a passion!
tbourner
Why can she not walk or cycle? You tell me!!! Actually, she won't cycle cos she got an abscess on her spine a couple of years ago, doc said it was caused from cycling so now she's scared to. I think it was her saddle position personally but I can understand her being scared. She walks home and back every lunchtime to let the dogs out plus walking 2-3 miles every evening with them, so she's not keen on walking to and from work as well. If I had a cheap enough transport I could come home at lunchtimes, so she could walk to work, so maybe that's the best idea.
shaky
It's not how fast you fall off,it's what you hit that counts,ie lampost, brick walls and one thing about mopeds, they can't keep up with the flow of cars, everyone will want to get past, get a 125 and keep up!! tbourner
All good advice. So maybe I'm thinking do my CBT (£100 ish?). Then get a 125 of some kind, either a scooter type or a trailbike type, don't really fancy a cg, what's the lightest style to get? looking at around £700? Or can I get one for less? Then ride it for 2 years (I think it's 2) and do the theory and practical (or DAS) in that time. eBay a good place for clothing? Seems cheap. I don't know what the difference would be between a £40 lid and a £400 one? (don't just say 'life' and 'death' ). Then the wife can walk to work and back and I'll come home at lunchtime. I'll probably end up rushing and not bothering getting geared up then though .
Mike
Dude... spend money on a lid.. it's protecting your noggin! I wouldn't even buy one on-line for fear of it being dropping transit, nevermind fleebay Go to Hein Gericke in Portsmouth, they'll sort you out - 'Box' do helmets from £50 upwards, that have all the proper standards etc. Some of them are recommended by the Bike press too
PJ
Yeah that. Hein Gericke or J&S in Waterlooville. For your CBT requirements have a chat with http://www.1st-castle.co.uk/ in Cosham.

Yeah I've heard that too, even if there's no external marks it can be wrecked inside. They're one use items and if the one use is during delivery you're buggered! tbourner
So I need to find a 125. Ideally it needs to be lightweight, low fuel consumption, 4 stroke, with some storage space and above all CHEAP. Any ideas?

Abz
bump - tbourner, where did you go with this in the end? I hate mopeds with a passion (well the noise) but the 125cc's don't seem too bad. Tempted to get it for a daily commute to work (8 miles).
TT Paul
you wont be able to carry a pillion as you'll be on L plates with just cbt and car licence. need to past test for bike to carry pillion and cbt only last for 2 yrs i think have to wait a yr ride around on a 50cc retake cbt then can ride a 125 again
tbourner
I bought a Yiben! Yes, that's a make of scooter, from China obviously. It was £600, a 125cc. So far I've had to replace the brake master cylinder (£30) and it now looks like the battery is knackered. Other than that it's pretty nippy and is perfect for my short commute to work. It is NOT fun on the dual carriageway!!!! Having said that, I don't like the hate for scooters, they say everyone on the road hates motorbikes, well everyone including motorbikes hate scooters!! So I'll be selling it soon and upgrading to a proper 125cc geared bike.
bluecoup
you can do cbt ride 2years, and do it again, ride 2 years and again and again etc etc there was a bike thing recently about people doing this and brussels wanting to bring in laws to basicaly ban l plates, so the only time you could ride without passing a test was when you had an instuctor with you, think it got slung out get your self a copy of motorcyclenews or get on the website, loads of bikes for sale on there will give you a idea on prices, what your looking for
tbourner
I thought you could only redo the CBT twice, or maybe it was once? I'm sure you have to do the test within 6 years or something. Anyway, I want a Yamaha YBR125, preferably less than 5 years old and preferably less than 10k miles. Should be around £1500. Hopefully I'll get £500 for the Yiben.
