What trannie?

Right, I finally have a nice amount of cash to spend on a TT Soop. The question that i have is which transmission to go for. I currently have a Cav GSi and have always had manuals, yet a lot of people say that with the power from the TT I should consider the auto box. What would people on here suggest, apart from the difference in prices between 2nd hand autos and manuals? Please help as I am looking for a change from the Cav as soon as possible!! :stupid:

Theres a big post about this somewhere on the BBS that I wrote. I have now used both types of gearbox on stock and modified supras and basically found both were as good as each other. If you want a car that scares the life out of your friends everytime you floor it then choose the auto, it does its absolute best to give the best acceleration it can. If you want a gearbox that if you get it right really rewards you but can sometimes be a bugger to use then the manual is the one.

 

Which ever one you choose you will enjoy the car every time you get in to it.

On the MKIV i have a manual (hence my signature) and on the MKIII there is an auto box.

 

The best advice anybody will give you, is to go and drive both and then see what you think. They are both very capable boxes and which one best suits you depends a lot on the type of use you will put your car to.

I have an auto box and love it. I have driven the tiptronic box and the manual which both were fun. The manual can be a bit of a bugger to find the right slot when you are trying to be fast with changes, mess it up and you get left behind. Almost impossible to mess it up in an auto.

 

With the auto you get very smooth delivery of torque either computer controlled or manual, the 6 speed appears quicker because you get torque serge at each gear change, but you have speed drop off in between changes so side by side there is nothing in it. IMHO and prepared to be shot down in flames.

 

John knows his stuff he has owned and driven many miles in both.

 

Martins comments may be those of one person but I have not seen anyone challenge what he wrote on this BBS.

 

Follow the advice, it is sound and base on many year of experience with the MKIV. Drive all types and get the best car you can find, I did not mind which box I got just want a car in very good condition, as that was my top priority, type of transmission came second.

 

You have to make your own decisions, based on the use of the car. Which ever one you go for it is going to be much quicker than you are used to. Take care in the seaon of little grip.

Thanks for that Termi, I did read the article, and I apologise to Martin as I didn't realise until a couples of minutes ago that he wrote it. Still nice to have thoughts from other people though. Off to look at an auto this evening. Think it's an import though, which isn't what I'm looking for.

Uk manuals are notoriously difficult to get hold of but you can get lucky if your patient (maybe 6-9 months of looking with cash waiting for a quick decision). Their tend to be a few UK auto's on autotrader most weeks and if you want to drive a Sup soon this looks like your only option.

You can get the bigger brakes as standard on the j-spec if you get a facelift version late 96+ - or you can get the damn things fitted to any normal j-spec (with stock 17" wheels)

 

The ceramic turbo's spool faster and produce near enough the same power but have a wider powerband.

 

J-specs are lighter

 

MY TT J-SPEC 6-Speed costs me £700 to insure and I'm 23.

 

My TT 6-spd is for sale. :D .... :( ..... :conf: ....

 

If you do alot of town driving then the aut is probably best if you do alot of A and B-road storming then the manual will be easier to get on with initially.

Brachial Plexus Injury lost use of right arm, still there though i kinda got attached to it :)

I wouldn't mind a Tiptronic.....
