nevins
It does, it burnt down just off the side of the airport Not much is documented about this site. It is located in a small quarry on private land. And consists of three entrance passages with a number of branch and side passages cut directly into the chalk. The three main passages were enlarged and brick reinforced where they pass under the lane above. This was carried out during WW2, and it is thought that these were used as air raid shelters for locals inhabitants with the sites proximity to Manston airfield. nevins
You have opened a can of worms for me now lol, Apparently at manston raf base, there are secret underground bunkers which have cacooned spitfires in that were forgotton about and lost years ago, found a thread about it, it may be an old thread from 2008 but there are things in it that make it possible. I will add a link and few images to get the minds going lol. http://forum.keypublishing.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=164232&d=1217671324 A pic of a buried runway that supposedly has the bunkers near http://forum.keypublishing.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=164274&d=1217874181 http://forum.keypublishing.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=164275&d=1217874181

nevins
This is interesting that I just found. Only 5 miles due South of Margate is Manston which started its aviation days as a Royal Naval Station in 1916, with a base at Westgate Bay for seaplanes. The early airfield was on the area now occupied by the passenger terminal of the civilian airport called London Manston. By 1917 Manston airfield had grown to include four underground hangars, its own railway line to Birchington, a power station to generate electricity, barracks for 3,000 men and even an indoor swimming pool.1940 and WW2 brought the Battle of Britain and Barnes Wallis arrived in 1943 to test his bouncing bomb at nearby Reculver before the Dam busters carried out their famous raid. R.A.F. Manston closed on the 31 March 1999 Now that just goes to show they liked their tunnels lol, so god knows whats under the ground in the surrounding area. nevins
Lets have a game then, follow the link and see how many things you can make out in the ground surrounding the airport and spot the hidden bunkers lol. http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?hl=en&safe=off&q=manston%20airfield&um=1&ie=UTF-8&sa=N&tab=wl

I cannot see the vents from here

Is that what you mean?
nevins
If thats the run way marked 28, have a look at the large shape in the ground just at the end next to what looks like houses, also along the same runway, there are supposed to be sunken bunkers along its length, now there are outlines that match all along there at intervals, some where on there is also pillar boxes and numerous access points for a underground network off tunnels that 100% exists. nevins
This maps alot better i would say alot more things can be made out at the end of the runway 28,. A picture taken by the Luftwaffe during the war of the same site. http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/3/32/Luftwaffe_Photograph_Of_RAF_Manston_1939.jpg Another cool link, http://www.danhamblin.btinternet.co.uk/pages/bob.htm Also have a few historians working into Ravens theory of a underground bunker being built. But they did like to hide things in the ground there during the war, due to the threat of bombings.

nevins
I love this stuff! How do you find all this shit Nev? Just practice and tracing back through links and all, Got a lot of practice when my bamp wanted me to find friends that he served with in Palestine with the royal welsh guards. Now that was hard but I managed to fin d the last 2 alive. One was his Sargent, called Bartram who now lives in Canada, he is cool as hell. The other was private Davies. The hard part of that is that something nasty went on when the were positioned so they did not speak about alot of the stuff so tracing it back was not easy. For some reason the records of what they did were unobtainable, I applied for them with permission off my bamp using his service number and they showed up until a certain date, after that date I was told that the information was unable to be released do to circumstances. My bamp won't even tell me what happened but Sargent Bartram would only say it was known as the Palestine massacre, so I thought it appropriate to stop digging on that. The weirdest thing is that there were never any pictures of his squad. Im fascinated by this stuff so spend hours researching it. Its the main reason what got me into urbex. You may find these cool, I want to go explore them before I die for sure. Anti aircraft Batteries from the war, now thats worth exploring. http://www.southeast-defencephotos.com/gallery/albums/userpics/10001/normal_WW1_submarine_1978_%284%29.jpg Thats also cool as hell a scuttled u-boat at Kingsnorth

Animal
Have you thought about contacting either the MOD or local barracks/regimental museums? If it was up here, I'd be asking at the regimental museum at the barracks. Definately interesting stuff.
