3uz conversion advice

Hi all, I've seen a 3uz engine for sale (4.3l vvti v8) and thinking of buying it for my next conversion.

 

I'm wondering if they are by anyway adaptable to the v161/160, r154 or w58 boxes? If not are there any alternative manual Gearboxes I can use which cam cope with a turbo installed on the engine?

 

Any advice would be much appreciated

You can run the r154 no problems as it will handle the Torque, you'll need a custom flywheel, bellhousing etc etc but they are very easy to get hold of ;)

 

ECU choice will be important as the VVti on them can be tricky to control

 

U know anyone who does then?

My advice would be don't;) you will gain 900cc over a 3,4 kit and end up with less power and torque, really do not see the point of this.

 

If you want a V8 get an aluminium chevy lump and TT that with a couple of 6262 you will have 1000hp and F**k knows how much torque at about 1 bar, you will make boost at about 2000rpm, put 2 76DBB's on it and hang on;)

Thanks bud, u guess your referring to the ls1 engines? I've thought long and hard, very expensive and what really puts me off is the loss of the v161 or r154! Wana be able to use one of these gboxs ideally.

 

How does the t56 compare to v161?

I reckon the V160/1 is stronger and better but there is no reason you cant starp one on the back of an LS1, I found a few cheap ones dude and parts are cheap etc, we are getting into these you may want to call for a chat, you may be pleasantly surprised.

The T56 seems to be able to handle as much power as the v160, but surely it'd make sense to use a T56 if the block is a chevy, the availabilty of bellhousing and clutches alone should make up for it. The main issue though it that it'd need some custom prop work and a shifter extension as the stock T56 extensions are about 4-5 inches short.

 

They are also a LOT cheaper than the v160, shipping as always bumps it up a bit.

I know of a lot more T56's that are broken than ive ever heard of 160's breaking, if you leaver the box in situ and get the motor to fit it all you need to worry about is engine mounts not props and shifter extensions/ speedo drives etc.

so your saying if you can fit the engine and gearbox in a similar position as the standard engine&box it eliminates the need for custom props and shifter extension. Basically concentrate a little more on the engine mounts etc?

Thats what I would do, keep the master cylinder slave etc the V8 will be fine bolted to the front of the 6 spd because it is only as long as a 4 cyl, the ally V8 will be lighter than a 2JZ.

and you would just use the prop from the t56 and the supra diff? would they bolt straight on?

 

and when you say keep the master cylinder slave etc that means you utilise the ones from the supra?

 

sorry for loads of questions

You have 2 ways of doing it dude, save the hassle of making box mounts , props, gear lever locators, clutch stuff and use the 6 spd or fit the V8 engine and box and make props mounts etc but no hassle making box to engine adaptors and flywheel adaptors.

I thought the 4.3 had an alloy block and if that's the case, wouldn't it limit what you could do power wise?
1UZ and 3UZ are alloy, only the 2UZ is a boat anchor :)

 

More of an issue is the fact that the 1UZ from 1994 and the 3UZ have thinner con rods.
