Abz
I can't hear it properly but all I can hear is a buzzing sound, like a shaver... is this correct?

Nic
On the vid was the steering wheel being turned? If it making the noise when turning the wheel it'll be either low PAS oil, air in the system or a knackered pump. If it's making the noise not turning the wheel it could be the crank pulley, or it may be the bearing in the PAS pump, you can hear mine in the background on this vid which sounds similar. hU5M-MZcSbI Edited August 25, 2010 by Nic (see edit history)
Nic
yeah constant wining noise an it gets louder when the steering wheel is rotated Check fluid level first, top up if low, turn the steering wheel from lock to lock half a dozen times (adding fluid as you do if the level drops) this should bleed out any trapped air. If it's still noisy after doing that then the PAS pump is probably shot.
Carbon_Bullet
fluid level is fine, checked it, so am gonna be needing a new PAS pump..great hope there easy to fit, have already contacted a member for one, although you mention the crank pully, it does make the noise just ticking over an then when its revving/driving down the road i have a loud embarrassing wine noise constantly coming from it. cheers for info Nic
Nic
although you mention the crank pully, it does make the noise just ticking over an then when its revving/driving down the road i have a loud embarrassing wine noise constantly coming from it. It's difficult to confirm a problem over the internet, I'd suggest getting a competent mechanic to have a look, they should be able to quickly tell you for definite what the issue is. I'd also check the steering rack and see if there is any fluid around the rubber gators, as the seals can go on the rack and cause loss of PAS fluid. Edit: noticed you are in Cheshire, I'd suggest calling CHris Wilson, he should be able to quickly diagnose the problem.
Andy Blyth
It sounds the same as mine when I had air in the system. Check in your reservoir when the engine is running for foam. The cause of air in my system was a failed o-ring on the suction fitting on the pump combined with an almost blocked filter at the bottom of the reservoir. A cheap and easy fix. However, the TT and N/A reserviors are different, I'm not sure what could fail on the N/A pump / reservior to cause this.
Supra-Brett
It doesnt sound like the crank pulley to me. Mine has just gone, and ive now had it replaced. It made a sqeek on start up especially of the aircon or fan was on, and occasionally speeked during driving, it didnt sound anything like that noise on your vid. PAS pumps do seem noisy on supes, but mine is only noisy when under load, which is what others on here have suggested, so if its noisy all the time it could be on the way out. Homer
PS fluid level is the first check as others have mentioned, but it doesn't sound exactly like that to me. It sounds more like a bearing is going, check the tensioner pulley..
Carbon_Bullet
additional info need, after having replaced the PAS pump an topped up fluid everything was great an now the noise keeps returning, i have to top up the fluid everytime befor i start to drive it, so obviously i have a leak somewhere, but carnt find where :/ once fluid is topped up noise stops, but ive gone throw nearly a LTR, how much does it hold? i replaced it 5 days ago an had to top it up every morning
Nic
It's common for the seals in the ends of the steering rack to leak, is there any fluid around/inside the rubber gaiters?
Carbon_Bullet
I have no idea where to start looking, :/ if you can descibe it I would appricate it thx
Nic
Underneath the front of the car on pics below it is describe as 'Power Steering Gear Assembly', check around the rubber gaiters on each end of the rack for fluid leakage. Note pics below are for a LHD Supra, but basically the same just with steering column on the other side. http://img249.imageshack.us/img249/9339/picture1eqq.png http://img524.imageshack.us/img524/9204/picture2rx.png Edited October 18, 2010 by Nic (see edit history)

Carbon_Bullet
Is this a big job to replace the rubber seals? Am confident I can do it myself, also can you supply them? Thx Chris
Nic
So is the fluid leaking from the steering rack? The seals are inside the rack itself (the gaiters are just there to keep the dirt out) and are a big job to strip down and replace. When mine went, it worked out a lot cheaper to swap the complete steering rack for a good 2nd hand one.

No idea how much they will be in the UK, new they are very expensive, try contacting Keron he may have a good 2nd hand one available.
