Network storage?

Been looking at getting something that i can ideally use just on my home network that i can use for pics, films back up etc,

and i came across this http://www.amazon.co.uk/Netgear-Stora-Home-Media-Server/dp/B002SNBCSQ

Seems like it would do the job, but i am not to sure about the fact that it only seems to stream media and do back up over the net, so the worry of security creeps into the equation?

Anybody got this, or something similar? or can suggest something similar?

Not a bad price, BUT with only one disk you do run the risk of loosing the data stored on there if something goes wrong. If you are looking for something a bit more safe I'd suggest two 1TB disks.

If you are planning films and the like be aware that 1TB will go QUICKLY :)

TBH for home use they are all pretty much the same.

I use a 2 bay QNAP and never had an issue with it, in fact I really rate them. I have also used most of the Buffalo units which have also worked a treat although some are just file storage.

It has the option of adding another 1t drive, which from my understanding acts as a mirror for the first,

as for films, it wouldn't be a complete library of feature films, as i tend to burn them to disc if i want to keep them, more my home HD video which takes an age to burn to disc so i tend to keep it on HD, got quite a lot on a 500gig HD and its still nowhere near full.

Its more the Internet security aspect of it that bothers me, the fact that someone could possibly hack any personal info that i might back up.

Reminds me of the drobo boxes for some reason.

Buy one with a 2-4 bay drive setup, you can get decent 2Tb 7200rpm drives now for circa £80. 4-drives and go raid-5 if you want storage, raid-1 / raid-10 if you want resiliency.

I await a nas filer/structure that can do Hadoop/hdfs. That looks quite good

As mentioned above there are many NAS solutions out there but since you are looking at NetGear Products already check out their ReadyNAS range. I've had one since January and apart from a few initial hiccups in setting it up with the correct login permissions its been fine. Rather than being a dedicated media server, they are a Network Attached Storage (NAS) device that can also act as a media server. I've got two 1TB drives in mine, as a mirrored pair to protect against failures.
