Thorin
I can't recall if Michael Winner has actually made any really good films. He hasn't... and why can't he open his eyes!?
AndrewOW
He hasn't... and why can't he open his eyes!? Just so he can't see how bad his films are. It's the squint effect that improves a rotten image.
Rob
He hasn't... and why can't he open his eyes!? If I'd had, and lost, Jenny Seagrove, I too would be able to gaze upon the world no more.
Matt H
The Super Hero thing is played out, homes. I know it has been done big time and the big characters have been done but there are loads in the pipe line still. Apart from the whole hour about his home planet dying and him being cast into space, landing on earth and growing up you mean? I wrote that wrong, it didn't spend the entire film going into depth about it. It went rather quickly from coming to earth, being a teenager for a few scenes then going to the dailymail. That's where the real story begins.
AndrewOW
So basically, you are after 'Smallville the Movie', then?
tbourner
I liked Taken, it's not quite Falling Down but it's similar enough that I can relate to it. We watched Unbreakable last night, well I did and Zoe fell asleep, we were searching through old video tapes and I actually thought it was 6th Sense when I played a few minutes in the middle of the film. Had no idea they were made by the same guy though. I'd say Unbreakable is better than 6th Sense as well.

Matt H
So basically, you are after 'Smallville the Movie', then? Where have you got that from? Are you talking abuot what I'd like to see in the 2012 Man of Steel film? I don't know really, something epic though, without lex luthor this time or maybe him playing a minor part if any. He's still still just human and can't stand up to superman really. Red kryptonite would be great.
Tannhauser
Oi! The Death Wish series was great As a teenager, I think I enjoyed the first couple. But they are one of those things where repeat viewings, and an older, hopefully wiser head, reveal more and more problems. I watched one a few weeks ago - Death Wish 4, I think - and it was dire in every way. In fact, in terms of quality of film-making, it made Taken look like a work of genius. They've also dated really badly. For me, films that are built on a cracking script and interesting characters often don't have that problem. Schlock films like Death Wish, that placed much more emphasis on action, now look very pedestrian and creaky.
Tannhauser
I liked Taken, it's not quite Falling Down but it's similar enough that I can relate to it. What, what, what? Falling Down, if I remember right, is Michael Douglas as a man who has worked within the American system for all his life, bought into the middle-American dream, and suddenly finds himself chewed up and spat out. So he goes on the rampage against all the things that he sees as subverting the dream that he has subscribed to. He's really a tragic, compelling figure. Even though Robert Duvall (?) is pursuing him, there's a sense that there is some bond between them. Liam Neeson plays a sort of human can of whoop-ass. He's in the right, the baddies are in the wrong, and that's all there is to it. Come on, Trev. That's like saying The Evil Dead is similar to Bambi because they are both set in a forest. RedM
While we're on about what is really go on in films, how about Piranha 3D as anti-evolutionary, anti-sex, pro-police state propaganda? http://io9.com/5618289/piranha-3d-is-anti+evolution-anti+sex-pro+police-state-propaganda
Ewen
Anyone seen Antichrist ? I have a friend who, whilst not as erudite as our very own Tannhauser, gives it a good fisting when it comes to getting deep and profound, and takes great pleasure in ripping new literal ass holes out of anyone who dares dismiss stuff like this film as crap. I once made the mistake of describing Dostoyevsky as being boring within his earshot. I'd already surrendered two minutes into his tirade, but he didn't notice and carried on upward toward the dizzy heights of an impending accademic cataclysm and the literary world being overwhelmed by bottom feeding dross such as Dan Brown. Apparently I was guilty of looking at the words yet not reading them. Anyway, regarding Antichrist. I watched the film, but I didn't see it. Not seen Antichrist, but I have read Dostoyevsky's The Idiot (which I like to think was originally going to be titled The F***ing Idiot). I thought it was boring, so I'm with you. Hang on...I read about Antichrist. I don't think I could cope with that at all, sounds absolutely gruesome. I generally like Lars von Trier though. I liked Idiots, Dogville(? The one with Nicole Kidman), Dancer in the Dark, Europa.

Ewen
Hang on...I read about The Antichrist. I don't think I could cope with that at all, sounds absolutely gruesome. On one level, a horror film. On another, art. Visually beautiful in places, some scenes are actually amazing as far as I'm concerned. The trouble is the overall experience was a downer. Very depressing...whatever the final message, hidden or full-on, was meant to be, all I can say is I didn't get it....its not a film I'll watch again. I often quite like it if I can't really figure a film out. Gives me something to chew on. However, I've read a couple of reviews since you mentioned it, Sounds a bit full on for my delicate palate. The sort of viewing that can't even be bought late night on premium cable.

The sort of viewing that can't even be bought late night on premium cable. Maybe they were talking about 9 Songs. I'd say that was more porn like in the usual sense of the word, not that I've seen it, just read about it. There are some fairly graphic sex scenes in Antichrist, but the mood is relentlessly dark and ultimately shocking.

I'm not interested in the right or wrong though, I was talking more about the no nonsense attitude like I'm doing this and to hell with the consequences. Probably not a good comparison really but I remember thinking of Falling Down after seeing Taken, so something reminded me of it - maybe my subconcious potential is imagined in each case. If that's what your subconscious potential is, then I'll do the sensible thing and agree with whatever you say. Don't want you tracking me down and breaking my bones/pulling my teeth out/shooting me. P.S. Your idea of 'no nonsense' = my idea of sociopathic criminal.
