Jake
I've just bought a bike, it's a Yamaha WR450F Enduro bike ...but it's in the Isle Of Man and I'm in Portsmouth. I don't fancy riding an enduro bike from the Liverpool ferry to Portsmouth, so I suppose I'm going to have to hire a van or something to collect it. Anyone got any other bright ideas how I might go about getting this bike from the IoM to here?
Jake
Well, it seems that I can fly there any day from my local airport (Southampton) for just £85 They guy said he can pick me up from the airport and even lead me to the IoM-to-Haysham (?) ferry. So I just need to somehow a way of getting the bike from Heysham to Portsmouth. Any suggestions?
Mike
How big is it? Can you get it on a train?? ..or hire a trannie van and tie it down?
Jake
I've been looking at van rentals, Mike. To hire a transit sized van for one day from Portsmouth and back to Portsmouth is like £45 but to hire one from Liverpool to Portsmouth is over £200 Can you put motorbikes on trains? That had not even occurred to me.
JamieP
WR450 dont go bad on the tarmac, will cruise nicely at 70mph, id ride it, i use to do 200 miles in a day on mine to sailsbury plain and back mostly off road without a thought. Jake
Really? I thought they would be awful to ride any distance. Hmmm, that would make organizing things a lot easier. How do you rate the WR450 Jamie? I was going to get an XR400 but saw this WR on ebay for very little money and bought it on the spur of the moment. It had only just been listed on eBay so I went for the Buy It Now option before somebody else beat me to it.

Well it aint no road bike but as enduro bikes go its one of the best imo, if you aint rode one in a while 250miles might kill you:D Be an adventure though. Is it an alley or steel frame one? both are good tbh, alley one is just a bit lighter/newer, they are very fast, fastest enduro 450 we found, much faster then the honda crf450x and a touch faster than the KTM450. Its what i would get if i was to get into green laning again.

If I really like the WR I may get a newer one later. Cheers.

Green laning is huge fun, go to wales and stay at Llanerchindda farm, clive the guide is a loon, i must stayed there 50 times and loved every second of it, the lads keep talking about getting into it again, if we do i will give you a shout:) http://www.cambrianway.com/index.cfm?id=
Jake
I'd love to do that but my mates aren't into bikes. Definitely let me know if you go again some time
jim
You might not need to go to get it from the Island Jake, I know that the IoM to Liverpool (and Belfast) allows you to send an unaccompanied vehicle across, although sometimes they'll ask the seller/whoever's delivering it to the boat to drive/wheel it on and walk back off the boat. It would be worth checking with the Heysham ferry people if they let you do the same. It also might be cheaper to hire a trailer to collect it from the dock if you'd access to a car with a towbar? Jake
Thanks Jim, Yeah, I think you're right. I called the ferry company but the girl said I need to speak to their Freight Dept and they had already closed for the day (9-5) Also I didnt want to do it that way because it meant paying the guy for the bike, which I've never seen in the flesh, and then trusting him to get it on the ferry for me. Shame though, that would've been a good way to do it.
jim
I search the cars getting on the boat to there from Belfast at the weekends, I'm always surprised at the number of cars that get left onto the boat for people on the island who have bought them on the net without seeing them first. It's the Manx Grand Prix this week, good time to go!
Jake
The seller said that cos it's the Manx GP this week the ferry prices are double the normal price. Just my luck!
