jackso11
a car that over heats every week once enough coolant has leaked out scares me. I will gladly give up a saturday to sort it finally!
The Raven
a car that over heats every week once enough coolant has leaked out scares me. I will gladly give up a saturday to sort it finally! I dont know if i would have the skills and mindset to be able to do it. I think i could probably get it out and changed but putting it all back together? Maybe with a bucket of bits left over. I remember when i found water in the bottom of my foot pan i nearly shit myself! lucky for me it was rain from a leaking aero seal. Must have saved yourself atleast £700 notes doing it yourself. Bravo.
David P
Better to take you're time and do it patiently in 2 days, rather than trying to get it done in one and possibly breaking something you wish you hadn't.
jackso11
As I am going to have my dash out at the weekend, is there anything else that is worth doing while its out?
David P
Renew any bulbs that may not be working, and inspect loom for bodges.
jackso11
Good plan. Is there anyway of getting aircon gas out of the system without driving anywhere? My radiator is almost dry and I don't want to fill it up as I am going to be taking the matrix out which will result in loosing loads of this toyota red coolant that I have now spent a fortune on. David P
Drain the Toyota 4Life into a clean container and re-use it. Leave the air con pipes alone and be gentle with the job and you won't lose any gas. That will save you £50 to £70 for a re-gas, and £20 for the 4life. jackso11
there is a drain tap on the rad isn't there? Last time I drained it I just took the bottom hose of but I think there is a tap for draining, right? anyone know where it is? Actually I don't think I need to drain it....there isn't much left in there.

jackso11
Well, stripped out the dash today to do the heater matrix, Thanks for the guide Jezz, very good write up but you have missed quite a lot of nuts and bolts that need removing! Check this picture, I reckon it clearly says heater matrix has popped!!
Jezz
Well, stripped out the dash today to do the heater matrix, Thanks for the guide Jezz, very good write up but you have missed quite a lot of nuts and bolts that need removing! Check this picture, I reckon it clearly says heater matrix has popped!! No probs, glad it helps. I jotted down every nut and bolt I removed / re-fitted when I did that write up! I guess there may be a few differences cross models, TT - NA - Manual - Auto ect. I'd say your matrix may have a small leak judging by that pic. The Raven
Holy cow! that might just be the matrix.... How long did it take to get that far?
jackso11
that far, about 10 mins. Thts only seats and carpet out. I will get pics up later of the current status. one bolt left to get off before the matrix is out. It got rained off yesterday so I had to stop. I would say its abou 3 hours so far and everything is out. Aircon is degassed....by mistake. whoops, didn't mean to undo that bolt! oh well. jackso11
got the matrix out and it doesn't seem to be bust at all, looks like it is this little vavle tht is bust. Anyone know the part number for toyota or what its called? Anyone have one in the london area as I need to get my car back together!
tooquicktostop
I would change the matrix anyway now its out, you would not want to fix the valve and put it all back together to have the old one go on you
jackso11
yeah I am putting a new matrix in, have it on standby but now I need this valve too
jackso11
All done, car running well again this job is not anywhere near as hard as it sounds, just takes time. £1000 or more for a garage to do it, no chance. Easy to get it done in a weekend, hell I would do it for £500 for people!
Dnk
My local garage did mine in under a day and charged me £300, anyone paying £1k to do this is being had over big time.
Dave
when you have all the dash out your thinking this is never going back together right ,but you just got to take your time and follow jezzs guide.
jackso11
Just thought I would update on this to sign it off. 5 weeks later and I finally got the car running again. Heater matrix is a 2 day job taking it easy, could even do it in one but I started in the afternoon both days. While i had the carpet out I gave everything a clean and decided to fit an amp, lay cables all ofer for my carPC and fit that and then got into all kind of other jobs. I can only work on the car at weekends so it dragged on a bit but its now running again and no over heating, a couple of polished bits under the bonnet, a uk spec bonnet on there...currently green/blue though. All good
