jonathanc
Right, I've been asked about this and not really sure so I hope someone here could shed some light. Basically I've got a friend who has a business based in HK. She wants to get a .co.uk domain name and do trading with UK customers. I am not really sure why she wants the .co.uk domain name though... So far I think her primary host is based in Hong Kong too. So is this anyway legal/possible? I'm have no clue about trading and business laws but I presume if I want to have an online shop I would just have to get a domain and and find a host and that's it? Doesn't really matter where I am based though?
Attero
I shouldn't see a problem with it, afterall all TLDs (Top Level Domains) are available to anyone willing to purchase them. You could always be more international and purchase a .com. More reputation points for that.
Bobbeh
My .co.uk is hosting in the states, no issues afaik!
jonathanc
Alright, thanks for the heads up
Martin J
I always thought there was supposed to be some kind of regulation to prevent this, then it turned out no-one could be bothered enforcing/checking it so your friend should be fine. If they are trading in HK and wishing to appear as they are trading in the UK though (i.e. someone living in the UK running the site as a UK business), unless made explicitly clear, I personally would treat them with a little skepticism. Although it's just a domain name, why not just have blah.com.hk/UK/ or something?
Purity14
People wouldn't buy from an ecommerce kingkonghongpong website, even in gbp. This is because they expect the goods to be substandard, or that they may never receive their goods. He wants a co.uk site to get around this fact, I can think of no other reason. However, she was telling me that she is interested to expand her business over here. She already runs the business in HK and she even has her own supplier. I've suggested that she just registers a business in the UK as well.
DamanC
Having a kongkongpong.co.uk would help massively when it comes to the UK's version of Google. Standard practice is to state trading address on the site too, and if the goods are coming from HK make sure she states that they are due to import taxes.
