Stonkin
Not sure what to title this thread but here goes I have just had a very strange phone call from someone in India, most of which i couldnt even understand. Putting the language barrier to one side but also because the line was completely muffled and breaking up. She advised me she worked for British Gas and apparently there is an outstanding bill of £22 from 17th July 09 to 31 July 09. I did move out at the end of July 09 Now i have never moved out of a property leaving any bills outstanding and this is the first i have heard of this. She said they have been trying to contact me by letter at my current address (which i still have a redirect from this old address on) yet i have never recieved any letters from them. I asked why they have tried to call me over a year later if they have had my number the whole time and she did not respond. They are apparently sending a new letter to me. I've just emailed my previous landlord to ask if this has been mentioned to her at all by the current people living there, as if this is true they must have known about this. I was in contact with them for a couple of months incase of any letters still going there and they also never mentioned anything to me. Surely when they took over the account they would have been made aware of an outstanding amount. If its true i have no issue with paying, i'm just trying to make sure someone isnt pulling a fast one. Anyone else had anything like this?
Thorin
I had the exact same issue with British Gas. Left our old rented accommodation and bought our own house. When we left I'd taken meter readings and contacted everyone and had bills and bank statements proving I'd paid them. I'd had phone calls from them saying I still owed them money, wrote to them SEVERAL times showing proof that I had given them readings and settled the final bills, but heard nothing. The so called debt was then passed to a debt collection agency who hounded me for a couple of years on and off who also never responded to my letters showing them that I had settled final payments. This was eventually passed to yet another debt collection agency after the first one realised they weren't going to get anywhere with me. Thankfully the new agency actually listened and accepted that British Gas must have been in the wrong and wrote the debt off. Good luck, but it took me about 4 years to sort out! Stonkin
Cheers guys. Im completely certain i paid everything up in full, its not worth the grief not to! But i really dont think i can prove it. Ive just googled the number i was called from and found pages and pages of posts like this below... If you receive a phone call from this number: 01613326130 IGNORE IT! It seems that British Gas may have given information on customers' names and addresses to Marketing Companies (as they do if you tick the appropriate box or not), one of which may have then inadvertently allowed unauthorised use of the data. This may have been neither the fault of British Gas nor the authorised user. These are being used fraudulently to 'chase' British Gas Customers for money that they do not owe. The fraudsters will know your initials, surname and address but will have no details of your account. They may, therefore, ask you to pay an electricity bill when you do not get electricity from B.G.! Bit of a give-away that! If you have any doubt about your bill and/or receive one of these phone calls, use the Customer Service phone number on your bill (usually a '0845' number in the top right corner) NEVER give out personal info and credit card details on the phone, no matter who they say they are. I think i'm going to call BG customer services, not that i have any account information, just an address. Grrrrrr!

Purity14
I get phonecalls asking me to pay for stuff all the time. Usually from India, I think someone has put my phone number on some kind of India-scam-list or something.
