200SX drift help?

S13 is great for learning, and cheaper to repair than the s14 and s14a, dont bother with the s15 silvia as they aint cheap on parts. Im currently looking for a s14a myself. 13's have the 1.8t which can be a pain in the arse, but the 14's have the 2l's in them, and suffer with vtt rattle.

by all accounts its the actual pulley wears and not the solenoid, the later solenoids #49 have a sprung ball bearing in it keeping a small amount of oil pressure in it to reduce the problem. From what I have found out a replacement pulley can cost from 400 to 600.

Nah S13's are almost all full of rust and the CA18DET engine is weak with chocolote big ends.

Best plump for an S14a - excellent value for money if you can find one without any rust (big enemy on the Nissans), a much more natural drift car with more lock than the S13 IMO - I've drifted both so commenting based on 1st hand experience. The SR20DET engine is a stronger engine with easy 300bhp potential - in a pretty light car it makes for excellent performance. Still not a patch on a JZ reliability wise with some niggling faults like vvt sprocket leaks and crude design that can lead to problems with blocked oil spray bars on the heads being common causing issues with the fragile double rocker arm setup.

Good fun cars, especially the 14/a for drifting, but engine transplants on them are common for a reason.

http://www.sxoc.com/vbb is their owners club forum - very busy place with loads of useful info and great club spirit

Cheers,

Brian.

first time drifter... gotta be a s14 or a s13 with a sr20det imo.

s14 are silly cheap... and so easy to replace lights, wings etc.....

i can replace the whole front end of my s14 for the price a headlight will cost on a s14a...

but they are all rust. the s14a are now just as bad- if not worse becuase water gets behind the factory fitted side skirts and rots the sills away- where the s14 never come with any as standard :)

as meantioned- sxoc is a awesome forum.

Nice info ther TDR, I have been searching through sxoc, but have come to the point where there is so many answers for the vvt rattle that i am at a loss with what's right lol.

Yeah there's a bunch of things but unless you're leaking a shitload of oil via the sprocket (usually just a weep of oil runs down towards the block when looking at the engine at the front) it's a case of just accept they're noisy ass unrefined engines and live with it - running a timing chain means they were never gonna be smooth and quiet like a 3S-GTE in the 4-Cyl world. With the stock T28 though they do pull hard from low RPM's with BPU type mods which makes for very useable torque whilst drifting. With it swapped out for the bolt onto the stock manifold GT28RS you can make even more power without sacrificing the driveability - a very nice setup, have been out in a few cars like that. The limitation becomes the stock gearbox when tuning and giving the car drift abuse really - it's pretty weak.

I'd have a 14a for drifting purely to get as new a 200SX as possible to try to get a rust free chassis / body, BPU it then have fun abusing it 'til the engine or box went pop. Then likely swap out for a 1JZ / R154 combo for more reliability with an increase in power and torque across the rev range for not a lot of cash

The S15 is very nice to look at but pretty much the same car as the S14a underneath with an even weaker 6-Sp box, so certainly not worth the premium for a fun / drift car.

An NA Supra?

Also, my cousin directed me to this sale thread on Driftworks forums where this dude sells imported drift cars. You'll drop your jaw at some of the prices these cars sell for (as in dirt cheap)

I had a long chat with my cousin about buying a drift car after supra pod and spending all day in his 1-via going sideways. :D . He suggested I buy a car with most the modding done, as in roll cage, suspension, engine upgrades and diff.

Being in your trade, you could buy a car from this dude, then make it look how you want.

TRUST ME!!! s14a are just as rusty as all the others now due to the factory fitted skirts...

get a s14 for the reasons i mentioned above

vvt... well just live with it. to buy a new sprocket is "only" £250 new (frp sports) but in uk they are something silly like 500quid new :o

So i am safe to go for a x reg s14a with a noisy vvt, thats good to know then. I want to get as new as possible really without going to the 15 silvia. The 14a looks nicer apart from the arse end as with all of them its just too high from the dirt.

black one looks nice- but be sure to pay 5-6k for it... black s14a are the most expensive (apart from s15...)

ill dig out a linking showing how bad, even s14a's rust...

http://www.sxoc.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=452424&highlight=mot&page=4

5.5k for a rust bucket....

(go from page one for giggles :) )

oh and the s13... meh- no mention of mapping... probably just photocopied a mates receipts for re-build... turbo smoke could be covering up other issues. oh and remember- for ever 10% of rust you can see... there is 90% you cant see ;)
