Whitesupraboy2
See today the PS3 was hacked. I wonder what that will do for sales! Clever way of doing it to, copies the game to hard drive so you dont need the disc again. It makes me wonder though, how hacking a console is illegal but in america they determined jailbreaking the iphone legal! However $170 australian bucks for this usb device...ouch!! Septic
Took their time. A testament to the strength of the PS3 I guess. Now, its time to get a PS3
Tricky-Ricky
I wonder just how long it will take for Sony to produce an update that will prevent access of this device;)
johnny g
About as long as it took Apple to bring out iOS4.0.2 to overcome the Jailbreakme.com site! So, about 4-5 days?
nuttynutz
I dont think Sony cares too much. IMO they've probably made enough of the sales now so they've won against hackers. plus they will probably just come up with a new update or once you play online brick the machine like xbox have done. Whitesupraboy2
from what ive read on this, the guys have used the SDK to produce it which makes the device illegal but harder to block i guess.
Thorin
Does it work with the PS3 Slim?
Whitesupraboy2
works with all models and all firmware versions to date. Still think ill hold out till I see more reviews, although load of tester reviews on it. Question is...is it just an expensive usb stick or something special. Wez
The PS3 was hacked a long time ago by the same guy who hacked the iPhone, he then stepped away after Sony went after him, the hack was done using the OtherOS option which Sony then removed with a firmware update. There are now cases open against Sony as the PS3 was sold with a feature which they have since removed, I myself run YellowDog on the PS3 via a HD TV and its pretty good, there are also companies that use said feature for building clusters, you can however still use it if you don't upgrade but then you cant go on-line. Lots of people jumped on the original hack and it looks like someone has finally cracked it, its been ongoing for some time now.
Mike
What is it hacked for? just copying games to the HD? It would be handy if it played US Bluray discs and was backward compatable
Bobbeh
I wonder just how long it will take for Sony to produce an update that will prevent access of this device;) Exactly. Personally, I cant be bothered with all this console hacking malarkey.

Mike
My PS3 slim from Game is completely region free... Did you have to do anything to it? It came region free? I bought a cheap copy of Point Break (for the missus, she's obsessed with it) and I didn't realise it was a Region 1 copy... PS3 said no. aman00123
My US pS3 was region free until one of the updates, now it wont play the few Blu Rays that are regionalised to Europe
Scott
Look forward to it being properly commercialised. Once it can copy backups to the drive it will be worthwhile. You would need a monster drive to backup my tiny collection, nevermind a true gamers collection of games. Will be worthwhile soon by the looks of it though. As said though, how long it took is a true testament to sony.
penguin
typically games would be around 2-5gb with all the video sequences etc stripped out... so on a 500g hard drive you could get a good 100-200 games
GazzaGSi
Why its good news for those that want it I'd be too worried of getting banned etc on the PSN with the profile I've built over the 4 years. I buy roughly 6-8 games a year, (unless if there's a decent one ive not tried in the bargain bin or something) and the majority are sub £30 on the net any way so think I'll pass. I'd be gutted it my profile / console got banned and lose the net access / trophies. Will be good to see how this device is doing in a year or so and see if it is stopable with a FW update etc though.

Nope, straight out the box plays US blu-rays and any region DVDs I have attempted with so far It is a slim. My previous PS3 60Gb was region locked

Also its been confirmed this hack is nothing to do with the previous hack and uses a different method. This device is illegal because its believed it uses sonys SDK's that was leaked sometime back to get around the console'sretail security and puts in debug mode allowing unsigned code. Either way some clever people and only a matter of time before its copied

GazzaGSi
Been shed loads of development on this over the last couple of days. Its pretty much blown completely open and with the right files for specific Teensy boards you can make your own USB stick. Also stated 'your average idiot/dummy will be capable of making their own'. And from the vids on youtube it takes literally 2 minutes if that. Most of the news I've been keeping up to date with is from Here
