Homer
Hopefully a simple question, in the attached picture should I be adding any grease around the bearing area before installing the driveshaft? Additionally, which grease should be used around the spines itself - if so, would that be copper slip? Strangely the service manual makes no mention of using any grease or copper slip anywhere in the assembly section of the rear hub.
madwoody1
i dont think i would put any copper grease/slip near any bearing even on the splines maybe very high melting point grease on them and near the bearing but i'm only a sparky not a mechanic
JODY T
I always used a little copper slip.. Can't do it any harm and it'll stop the shaft seizing in the hub..
Graham S
As above mate, just splash some copper grease on the splines and get it on!! All that will do is help should you ever need to take it off again at some point.
Homer
Cheers all Knowing this car it will more than likely be coming off again at some point Any idea about greasing the visible part of the bearing itself? there seems to be quite a lot of grease in there but looks a little dirty... Graham S
In theory the bearing shpuldn't come apart, it's a press fit so there shouldn't be anything to put grease into. If it has dirt in there try and wash/wipe out whats there and that should do fine mate.

If so what type of grease? Edit - no chance of it coming apart, it's all secured in there with the clips and seals in place.
Graham S
I doubt you'll be able to get any in there, but if you can then some sort of high velocity grease will be fine, although you may be looking at it thinking its dirty but is almost black anyway rather than a goldie sort of colour of different type grease.
