Oddball87
Hi guys im thinking of getting a side-exit exhaust made. I have read a few threads on this and it sounds like alot of work to do to put it out at the rear, what about putting it out at the front drivers side of the car? Could this be done? i no it would be crazy loud and would get me pulled alot, will it affect performance? just want someting different and would be a great weight saver. Gaz6002
You're better off having a screamer pipe exiting out of a sideskirt IMO... then it's only crazy-loud when it's on boost
Oddball87
Ok thanks dude. I did take the exhaust off at the weekend, i left the first down pipe on and took it for a quick drive at full boost its crazy. Sound's good though. JustGav
Only prob.... 1. Police will pull you over all the time 2. You won't be able to attend most track days...
shaky
side-exit exhaust ?? seen one on a mk 1 xr4i with a big v8 stuck in it,you can make them loud or not, what this lad did was have 6 thin steel plates, over the exit with 2 bolt holes mounted on the side,he said back pressure was there the more you tighten the bolts as is the noise, not sure about that because he went for a blast and my ears went pop!! Chris Wilson
Ground clearance? Noise? Noise? Did I mention noise??? This is Shropshire old boy, not some inner city ghetto estate, you'll frighten the wildlife and the local yokels
bodilx6
Just put the downpipe straight through the firewall. That'll save weight and let you enjoy all sounds. At least for a good 10 seconds or so...
Abz
Surely doing that would cause performance issues, I assume you are running a Turbo? Would have thought this would have been more suited to NA engines, hence why you would see it in the American Muscle car scene. What about heat? Chris Wilson
Most low race saloons that used side exit exhausts had the floor pan channelled to allow the system to tuck up out of the way.

Yes mine is a TT, Will be putting my single on some point this year. Any ideas on the heat? I would imagine this would be an issue to? I thought it was better to run a shorter pipe off a turbo? Oddball87
It sounds like alot off work to do, and there is always be the cop's, next door next neighbors and most probably losing my hearing early. Dont sound like there is many benefit's for doing this? Will most probably get a screamer pipe instead then.
jagman
Ever heard a Merlin engine in a spitfire? It has about 6 inch long exhausts- similar effect , the cops would hear you for 5 miles, and sheep would drop dead in fields as you passed by! Neil-NA
Alot of the Pulsar GTi-R owners do this, does make it crazy loud compared to a normal 'oot the back' exhaust, over 109db IIRC Edited August 17, 2010 by Neil-NA (see edit history)
richarde7927
I had a side exit haust on my civic turbo it came out just infront of the front wheel on the drivers side . i never once got pulled but it was silly loud Rich.

I thought it was better to run a shorter pipe off a turbo? Not too sure, generated heat in that area would be my main concern. I think a scream pipe there is a good idea

Kopite
Didn't Jason with the Dragon Supra have side exit exhausts? Or were they just cosmetic fakes?
