but is this the only way to remove the glass lens i really dont fancy putting them in the oven and hate the idea of using a heat gun even more

Works fine. I normally go for 100 deg c. Don't go any higher though.

I haven't tried a gas oven so couldn't comment or recommend

And how long at 100 deg?

Usually 10-15 mins. Don't worry they won't burn at that temp. If you want to be extra safe 80deg c is fine too, just takes a little longer

On this subject sort of, is there an easy way to remove the old very sticky sealant

Done it a few times now and yes it really does work and no it doesn't melt them. The best results I had was at around 90 - 100°C for about 10/15 mins. Found I needed a fair bit longer for the back lights though.
