Front/rear Light tints

There are quite a few Supras on here that have dark tints on the rear lights and I've seen a few cars in mags that have the front lights tinted - what is the legality of this, is it down to the discretion of the MOT tester or the police?

I had my front lights tinted with dark smoke film, the mot said they would have passed if they were a light smoke, he also said some workers in the mot Center will let u pass and some wouldn't, best to befriend someone who works in the mot Center then you'll get anything through lol
