dr_jekyll
after closer inspection of my second engine whilst cleaning and prepping for a rebuild i noticed a few things around the water ways that have concerned me. is this quiet normal for an old block or is this now scrap ? Rummy
I think you can get the pitts welded then skim the whole surface?
RobD
Dead, you could chemical metal it I suppose but I wouldn't want to reuse it!

edge
i thaught so. how would that happen? My guess would be crap coolant, old coolant or wrong type of coolant? As its only a waterway surely this would be saved? I know nothing when it comes to rebuilding engines
RobD
You can buy a kit from local car places, apply it to the areas needing it make sure it's smooth then build the engine up again, I've only used it once on a shed of a rover, that's only because the owner didn't want to spend alot of money and opted for the pikey fix! Otherwise it wouldve had a new block! Is the head the same?

That's coolant erosion, probably didn't have the correct mix of coolant/water
dr_jekyll
no the heads fine. thers no point spending big money on internals to build a high powerd engine if its not rite so ill bin this one and try find a good block. would using just plain water as coolent be bad for the water ways? RobD
Using plain water would be bad for your engine let alone your water ways! Coolant has a higher boiling point than normal water and contains some form of rust prevention!
evinX
Im not great with engines, but surely that can be saved?! get the pitted areas welded up, and have a machine shop smooth it back?
Chris Wilson
Whilst probably not scrap it's far from ideal. I'd find a better block for a performance build.

I'd like the head - you need the block? ? i think his block is a wee bit out of my price scope and i wanted to do the work myself.
