Supra N_A
basically i have sold the supra and still have my sky insurance account left open as i do not want to loose my 1 year no claims bonus. the thing is i get my new car in november so it is going to have to stay open till then even thow i am still paying monthly. my parents say i can use the spare mini for the time being, i rang sky up and thought since i am still paying for the supra can i swap it for the mini just till november but i cant becouse i am not the registered owner since its my mums mini. so any ideas on what i can do its really annoying as i am still paying monthly and theres a mini that i can use since i do not have a car atm!! Supralad
What? Doesnt make sense... i thought you could insure any car even if you dont own it, makes less sense as your parents own the car. You did tell them that right? You should be able to insure the mini... if they wont do it ask to have your mum added as the main driver to the insurance policy and drive as a 3rd party untill november. This will work out cheaper as well Im in Marine insurance but the gf is works for a car insurance company, if the above wont work let me know ill ask her. You can insure any car, even if you don't own it, but I think the owner has to be on the policy. Also, the car cannot have insurance already on it, you are not allowed 2 private insurance policys on the one car.

Cant you get added to your mums policy? Or is the point you need any car on your policy to keep the NCB?

It is an option with all online insurance quotes.. "are you or one of the named drivers the owner of this car"... usually something along those lines. LMAO I take it the company doesn't insure under 25's then? You're going to have an even bigger problem. If you have sold the car, your insurance policy is now invalid as you are no longer the registered owner of the car you have insured. This means that you are committing fraud by having a 2nd policy open on a vehicle that you don't even own. The new owner has the legal right to the insurance policy so you are the one who would get done. Have you asked sky if you can just cancel the policy, let them keep the money and just give you your years no claims?
stevie_b
Edit: beaten to it by others, but I'll leave it here anyway... Maybe Sky are concerned about the mini being insured twice (which no insurer will like)? You haven't said in your post whether your parents have already got a policy out on the mini. Or, maybe they don't want to deal with someone who's not the registered owner. I think that's just to make their job easier and less hassle-prone. Even if you are going to be the main driver dont tell the insurance company that. Ring your mums insurance and ask them how much it is to get yourself added to the policy under 3rd party fire and theft. You can also ask to be added to the policy under a 3 month endorsement, just depends which way you want to go about it. I would assume the cheapest, so ask for a quote to be added under 3rd party F&F and ask for a quote for cover for only 3 months. they are being dicks if they dont insure you. Supra N_A
i am on the phone again to sky and they say 100% need to be the registered owner for me to get insured on the mini. so only option is putting me as the registered owner for the car does any one kno if this costs to do with the DVLA
Scott
they are being dicks if they dont insure you. That's what they do when they don't want under x people on their insurance. I was with a company a few years ago, it was an insurance finance deal thing. I got insured for £192 for the year, I was told that I would have full no claims totalling 75% off for the next year. When it came round I got a quote of £1800, I thought that was OK so I phoned up asking for my 75% discount. Turns out that WAS with the discount. I was then told they only insure over 21's but as I was a customer I had to be given a quote. They give ridiculous quotes to put you off basically. Supralad
Well if your mum has a policy on the mini, sky shudnt insure you anyway. Your only option is to get on your mums policy and hope that YOUR old insurance policy runs out without the insurance company finding out you have sold the car so you can get your NCB

Supra N_A
What happens to your no claims now? my claims are still running with sky as i am just a named driver on my mums car different insurance policy and i am still paying for the insurance on the supra till november when the new car comes so there is no point closing it becouse 1 i would loose 1 year no claims and would get charged for cancelation fees + i will be using it in november anyways so... Vicky
You cannot just insure any car, it depends on if there is an insurable interest. Also if sky see your posts i suspect they may cancel your policy anyway as you are trying to still insure a car you do not have.
kill1308
Strange, I managed to insure myself on my mums Discovery for a week while I needed to move a load of stuff. My previous insurer asked if the car was insured by anyone else and I said yes, they said it was no problem and just needed to make a note of it. Maybe the length of time makes a difference? Vicky
What insurer it is makes a difference, some will see that as acceptable, some wont! If they were all the same there would be no differences in pricing.
Supralad
why didnt you just go 3rd party on your mums current insurance policy?! sounds so confusing but atleast its sorted.

If you were honest about it then it isn't fraud. Your Mum having an accident and claiming your insurance is though, and vice versa. It can get a bit ropey when all that happens so most tend to not allow it.
