SupraP-Z
Went to see toy story 3D with my other half my sister and some of her friends the other day...to say i was disappointed with the 3d aspect is an understatement! There were more 3d visual parts in the adverts preceding the film, than in the film itself! Got to the cinema early for a change, bought our uber expensive 3d tickets (geeky glasses included) and of course popcorn and beverage to suit. Sat down in a decent space and settled in, soon started the ads which were pretty impressive to say the least, the 3d - really was 3d! felt like the pictures were right there in front of you. Now we all had high expectations, ive seen 3d films before and most of them didnt have realistic 3d like these adverts, so i thought we were in for a treat. What a bloody rip off...not one bit of 3d action in the film at all not only that but i ended up with a headache trying to concentrate with the stupid glasses on. What happened to the good old days with the red/blue glasses? I really felt like complaining to get a refund that night...they charge quite a bit extra for 3d! was not impressed at all! 3d my butt! What have you guys experienced when seeing these new "3d" films?
Wez
Avatar was good in 3D but there were scenes that you could watch without glasses as they weren't 3D, I agree that the adverts looked really good, I also watched another movie in 3D and it was rubbish, can't even remember which movie. Brett 1
I have given up on 3D films aswell, I hate wearing the glasses and most films only have a few 3D moments

kill1308
Depends on the movie I think. From what I've read, some films are designed and filmed in 3D and the filming of the movie is based around it, for some movies it's an afterthought. I've not seen Toy Story, but I watched Avatar and Christmas Carol in 3D and was very impressed, particularly with Avatar.
Rob
I was talking to a guy who was sort of a filmmaker, about 3D and he said its up to the directors to use this new technology the best way. Like any new development, moving cameras, steadycam, dollies and suchlike, it opens up new creative avenues for the artist. Just making a film in the normal way then adding in some pointy out 3D stuff won't satisfy the audience, just like there would have been little point in using the new colour film back in the 30's and then making a film set in the grey and murky North about a coal miner who sketches in charcoal, at night. Attero
Another way of gaining large amounts of money by conning the gullible public...... It's not that though. We don't have a choice in the matter anymore. I hate watching 3D films. Headaches. Annoying glasses. It's one of those things we are going to look back at in 10 or 20 years time and think, "we were a bunch of idiots."
creative
dont forget alot of films are adapted to 3d... rather than filmed in 3d such as avatar.
Rob_Mitchell
christmas carol was awesome, and avatar is prob the best fim i have ever seen and in 3d it was incredibal
Willson
Gimmick imo - certainly while you have to wear glasses anyway. For what its worth, I have seen Toy Story 3D and I thought the 3D was decent. I might go and see Avatar Extended edition in 3D as that looked very good in the trailers we saw. But yeah, flash in the pan I reckon.

hackin_n_bashin
As I heard it, TS 3D isn't supposed to be in your face, just make it feel more realistic. Avatar 3D was good, wouldn't see it in 2D, would rather watch a good cowboys and indians film, same storyline, better acting and more involving!! Snooze
As I heard it' date=' TS 3D isn't supposed to be in your face, just make it feel more realistic.[/quote'] This. Like when surround sound started coming in, some film makers used to over-emphasize its use, deliberately introducing scenes where sounds would come from behind the audience, etc. You'll see a lot less of this in films these days - surround sound is used subtly, trying to create a slightly more immersive overall experience rather than just over-emphasizing the new technology. Maybe they should do the same with 3D. Personally, I am not sure, as I do not believe that the experience is enhanced sufficiently to justify the overhead of costly filming and viewing technology and the need to wear silly glasses. Leave 3D to just be an over-the-top special effect for shorts, gimmicks and adverts.
imi
I have seen Avatar in 3D and also in 3D IMAX - and the 3D experience in the IMAX is in a different league - well worth it - the former, good but nothing special.

I mean, it has it's place, but its not going to be the revolution that the media/industry were making out.
AndrewOW
I agree that true 3D will only be good once we can do away with the glasses. That would be truly amazing IMO. The screens would have to be completely resdesigned, but I'd imagine it's possible. Laser holograms, anyone?
neo2810
It's either 3d on IMAX or normal digital for me. The digital 3D is not enough of an enhancement to justify the extra cost. However, 3D IMAX is incredible for films shot in 3D (not converted). Avatar was special, and is not the same film in 2D. Saying all that, I was impressed with "Up" when I watched it in 3D Digital so I guess it's down to the film. What really pisses me off though, is the tool who stands in front of the IMAX screen before the show and delivers his little speech. And then what pisses me off more is the tools in the audience who clap for him afterwards.
Ark
I saw TS in 3D - I don't know what you were watching, but there was _loads_ of 3D in there! Didn't you see the depth of the image? Just because it didn't keep looking like stuff was jumping out of the screen doesn't mean it's not 3D.

Agree, Avata and Christmas Carol were good but went to see Toy Story on Tuesday and thought it was not worth the 2.10 extra each! Sorry meant to add, why has it taken so long for 3D to take off, I remember seeing Jaws in 3D many years ago with the blue and orange glasses, I am sure that was the colours bud o correct me if I am wrong as memory is fading lol

Just because it didn't keep looking like stuff was jumping out of the screen doesn't mean it's not 3D. Ok ive got to admit, the pictures definately had more depth...but it wasnt the type of 3d I was expecting. I think the best film i ever saw in 3d was in America, i went to see honey i shrunk the kids (back when i was 8) that stuff had me cringing in my seat and closing my eyes! and that was back in the 90's! Yes i was 8...but thats besides the point lol. I havent been to the Imax to see 3d, so i cant really say...but ive seen Avatar in 3d, and it too was ok - nothing special. Only a few bits really came out at you, like those floaty flowery things, i saw a lot of the people in the cinema reach in the air to try and grab them...now thats more like it! Until there is some real 3d stuff out as people say where you can watch without glasses, i dont even mind watching with glasses as long as it actually is 3d! lol, but i think i will be avoiding these films for a while, again as some of you have said, its just a gimmick. Still disappointing though...

AndrewOW
The best 3D I ever saw was the T2 'ride' at Universal Studios in 1997. Now that was made for 3D, and even had 'real' effects while sitting in your seats. Excellent stuff. I think people aren't quite getting the 3Dness at the moment, as I think it's more to do with a more natural depth of field, rather than things just thrust out into the audience for 'wow' effect, but those moments do really make a difference. The Navi's spears and the little flying 'fairies' in Avatar come to mind.
RedM
I read somewhere that TV manufacturers are already thinking that 3D TV will be a fad and won't become mainstream. Buyer beware.

Also went On the T2...i remember (cant remember which ride exactly) but was sitting in the seats and they blew shots of air through the footwell, and were showing mice running towards you on the screen...felt so real! Same with a Cobra spitting and they sprayed water on you....well something like that anyway. Totally agree with Andrew here....its the wow effects that make it worthwhile
