ray007
you can get some cheaper rooms in Stratford and Walthamstow area, about £50 for double bed, but it wont be as comfortable as travelodge/holiday-in hotels. There's parking in these area and very local tube & bus stations
AJI
Many thanks for all the suggestions guys. Docklands area ruled now ruled out, I'm investigating other areas closer to the centre and changing the weekend so that I can book further ahead to get some cheaper prices. supra_aero
This sounds very interesting Is this 'shock' her in a good way...or as in 'turning white' type of shock? Shock as in she will be like putty in your hands. Mirror'd styled black tiled ceiling springs to mind . Its not at all tacky though. Really will take her breathe away honestly. Worth doing for an anniversary or first/second date if you can afford it and want to sweep her off her feet
AJI
OK, nearly there with finalising my plans. Just out of interest..what do the tube ticket prices cost in terms of the ZONES? The hotel I'm about to book is very close to NORTH ACTION tube station which from what I can gather is on the boundary of ZONE 2 and 3 and the tube map states it as being on BOTH ZONES. Does the ticket price go up a lot if travelling from zone 2 to zone 1? Or even zone 3 to zone 1?

It's a lovely area but again I think it's just too far out to enjoy London. Pay and extra £20 per night and get a London hotel mate. I guarantee you will regret staying anywhere apart from a 2 mile radius of Picadilly Circus!
Westcoaster
Stayed in the Thistle Hotel, Euston when last in London with a couple of mates, hotel was cheap (for London) and was relatively close to Piccadilly Circus and Soho etc. Went by train, so can't comment on car parking, having a car in London is a hassle! So much easier in Zone 1 or 2 , paid £20 odd quid for an oyster card for 4 day's , tubeing it everyday and got money back when handed in happy day's ! ! Try fulham/chelsea area honest mate, will not be disappointed, off at fulham broadway , and it's a quieter/posher area , but still a busy area and easy to nip into the centre

Travelling between zones is more expensive than travelling within one zone. The tube cost wouldn't be prohibitive I think, even travelling between zone 9 (or whatever it goes up to) and zone 1. Maximum fare is just shy of £8 IIRC if paying per-journey. If you're sightseeing and based outside the centre, I'd imagine you'd travel into the centre in the morning, circulate within zone 1 during the day, then get back out in the evening after dinner. What would be prohibitive is the time spent travelling between the outskirts and the centre.

That is up to zone 6 and when you times that by 2 (£16) and the 45-50 minutes travel from that far out it really isn't worth it. You may aswell pay the £20-£25 extra per night to stay in London. - Also, if you want to stay out past midnight you will have to take a cab and that will be at least £30-£60! AJI
How long to travel from Zone 2 to the centre of London by tube?

AJI
Thanks for the help people. My main two options as I see them are the following: (1) Pay about £80/night for 3 nights at North Action tube station area (or similar distance out of the centre). Paying £10/night for 3 nights for hotel guest car parking. Then taking tube in to centre on Sat+Sun monring returning at evening. Apporx cost = £280 (2) Pay about £100/night for 3 nights within Zone 1. Paying about £35-£40/night for 3 nights for hotel car parking. Congestion charge for car for 3 days inside zone is about £15? Travel around can be done on foot. Approx cost = £420 Option (1) still works out cheaper for me. (Please point out any glaring errors). supra_aero
I'd still do option 2. Acton is miles out. Yes 10 mins to zone 1, but notting hill is not really central-central. Though you have portabello road and stuff to see there I guess. Still, there are so many things you can do in central London 24 hours, being so close means you will save on taxis, can come back to hotel to drop things off and head back out. Theatres/bars/nightclubs/soho/sightseeing/parks/imax/london eye/ etc. etc. Not many of the above are in acton By the way if you stay in central why bother taking the car? You won't need it and can save a lot walking and bus 'ing around.

There is no congestion charge between 6pm Friday to 7am Monday so don't add that in. Also, I am slightly out of town but see if there is a member on here that is more local who can let you park at their house.
AJI
OK, after taking the advice of many on here I've found somewhere near the centre called The Belgrave Hotel on Clapham Road. Its just outside the congestion zone and car parking is only £10 per night. Double room is £85 per night. http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=Belgrave+Hotel,+City+of+London&sll=51.480528,-0.117545&sspn=0.019698,0.071926&ie=UTF8&hq=Belgrave+Hotel,&hnear=London,+United+Kingdom&ll=51.4894,-0.128059&spn=0.040724,0.143852&z=14 Would this be a decent location to see the main touristy things in London? stevie_b
Yep, that'll do nicely. You're near Buck Palace, Houses of Parliament, and an easy tube ride from the West End.
ilicos
Good find, only a £15 cab from central London and far enough away to have some peace and quiet.
