Lurch Posted August 10, 2010 Share Posted August 10, 2010 Hello, my gearbox has started playing up. I did a few drag runs and my first one was fine. Done another one 20mins later and it would not go in 2nd, so I put it in 3rd, then it wouldn't go into 4th easily, but did eventually. After a bit of messing about putting it into all the gears whilst standing still I tried another run and it was ok. But now every now and then whilst driving normally when I put it into 2nd the part of the gear knob that you pull up to put into reverse seems to go up itself when I put it in 2nd and 4th and it doesn't feel right, other times it can be normal. I'm thinking its a combination of the oil/ heat making the oil thinner and something up with the selector part of the gearbox. Anyone have any ideas what I can do from now? Lurch Posted August 10, 2010 Author Share Posted August 10, 2010 (edited) I'm not 100% sure as I've never been in or driven another manual supra before, but I may have a short shifter as the gearstick seems low and doesn't travel much when changing gear, maybe that wouldn't help? Is that something that can be changed with the gear box still attached to the car or gearbox out? The bushes I mean? Terminator Posted August 11, 2010 Share Posted August 11, 2010 It is difficult but not impossible to do with the box in place. If you can get the car on a ramp, access is easier if you pull the box down after undoing the box rear mount bracket and removing the front section of the prop,( match marks essential). It may be the short shift mech, (total waste of time IMHO) the stock stick in not exactly very long. Steve Posted August 11, 2010 Share Posted August 11, 2010 Check the 4 bolts that hold the gear stick in place under the rubber cover, I had one of these break a while back and the bolt was sitting on top stopping the car from selecting certain gears. Thanks for the advise, I will try what Steve and Chris suggested in the hope its an easy fix otherwise it will be what you just suggested! Chris Wilson Posted August 12, 2010 Share Posted August 12, 2010 M6 by 10 or so mm long cap heads will stop any breakages of the fasteners, but it's only a problem if they come loose.
