gavin.starr
Just a quicky really. What are they like for reliability if they are kept standard, im after replacing my polo and fancy a little pocket rocket. I have always fancied one but couldnt justify my apprentice wage going on one. Now i can somewhat afford it im rather tempted but unsure as to what a 1.3t engine can take before they go bang. I know some are running large hp but just wanted to know what they are like as an every day commuter, as i dont want it to be like the supra, when something goes its not going to cost me a fortune in repairs. kill1308
I've read that that manifold ideally needs changing if you plan on upping the boost as the standard one is quite restrictive and can create a lot of heat in one of the cylinders (or something along those lines). I don't know much else about them other than that they are supposed to be pocket rocket but have really awful handling unless you fit a decent suspension kit. It's only what I've read on random forums over the years though so could be a load of rubbish
nevins
they are a ok car but the thing with them is they are quick to 110 then nothing, they are light and thats the reason for being pocket rockets they are ok cars. Never really had a problem with them apart from things like rust on the older ones, the arches like to go.
Chris Wilson
Left alone they are fine, a good, if dated, hot turbo bargain. Modded they can be frail.
gavin.starr
I wouldnt be doing any modding, just want a better every day run about thats a bit more fun than my polo. the only thing i would do is stiffen up the suspension a bit to make it corner better. As for 110 i wouldnt be reaching speeds like that any way so thats plenty for me. I may resume trying to find a good model thats unmolested. I have driven a couple now and don't really find them apealing, i would rather go for a Honda Civic as its more reliable and easier to mess with. Suprab1
I have to say i'm a fan of the little glanza. I've never been in one but like you i'm always thinking about one for a run around. I have a 1.3 non turbo 5 door at the minute & it's gave me the last 5 years trouble free.
Kevin Huntley
I have a modded example running around 250BHP at the Flywheel that I have owned for around 3 years, absolutly love it. Im running a K24 turbo and the power delivery is rapid. Parts are much cheaper than on the Supra. You can get fully built bottom ends for around £1700. There are also loads of good second hand cheap parts as lots of owners choose to break there cars for parts instead of selling them as a whole. Only problems I encountered with the car to date were a failed Knock Sensor, cracked down pipe and split CV Boot joint. Theres loads of info at toyotagtturbo.com Thanks Kevin
Supra N_A
mate, there mint i used to have a starlet gt turbo ep82 170bhp AT 0.7BAR and it was super quick considering it weighed 850KG it would beat my supra N/A of the line no problem what so ever... modding can do so much to them and the good thing about them is its a 1.3= cheaper, road tax, petrol, insurance and mods or service parts and its still a fast car... this was my ep82 i am actually getting another starlet but a glanza V turbo
Ganty
They are a quick car for a 1.3 I remember having a play with a few at japfest and was really supprised with the performance
Chris Wilson
Or if you want the most complication in a small hatch how about a Nissan March Super Turbo? Both turbo and supercharged, they were really nippy in their day and felt like they had a MUCH bigger engine. There used to be loads of tuning stuff as there was a race or rally series for these. caseys
Or if you want the most complication in a small hatch how about a Nissan March Super Turbo? Both turbo and supercharged, they were really nippy in their day and felt like they had a MUCH bigger engine. There used to be loads of tuning stuff as there was a race or rally series for these. They make me think of a cross breed between a Renault 5 Turbo and Lancia ECV The car originally produced over 600 horsepower (448 kW) from a 1759 cc twin-turbocharged engine. This engine, christened Triflux, was built in an unusual fashion; the valves were crossed (for each side of the cylinder there was an intake and an outtake), so that the two turbochargers could be fed with two separate manifolds. A single manifold carried the intake air (hence the name, from the three separate air ducts). However, Group S rules would have artificially limited the car's output to 300 hp (224 kW) to limit speeds. I'm sure some people supercharged them too
