mobsta_01
I'm looking to buy a HDMI cable to coneect my PS3 to my LCD tv, but i'm a little confused about which one to buy. Mainly it's the price difference between them that's confusing me. I've had a look online and they vary from as little as £1.29 to over £50. So can anyone tell me what the difference might be and whether i should just get one for a couple of quid?
MaveriK
Its running a high quality signal so i would not be putting my trust in in low end cable, nor would i really want to spend top end money as thats for sound and vision perverts. Think i wedged out £20 for my 1m cable. http://reviews.cnet.com/hdmi-guide/ I think its important to remember that the cables are running digital and not analogue signals
ellis
£9.99 max for these. Expensive ones are a con.
Wez
£9.99 max for these. Expensive ones are a con. Cable quality makes no difference to how 1 and 0 are transmitted
Smallshinyant
No it makes no difference. Digital, you either get a signal or you dont. unless you are going over 10 foot, go with what ever fits your colour scheme. http://www.popularmechanics.com/technology/gadgets/tests/4235717 http://tvnz.co.nz/fair-go/expensive-tvs-and-cables-3112416 just google hdmi myth. edge
Had expensive and cheap. Couldn't notice the difference. I spent money on good speaker and audio cables and did notice the difference but its marginal

mobsta_01
Thanks for that guys. The bloke at Comet told me that the monster cables were the best and apparently there's different versions. He said the Monster 1000 cable had a greater bandwdth and was therefore more suitable for the PS3. I didn't have a clue about what he was telling me so i decided to ask on here. AlexJames
Yeah the guy at Curries tried to sell us a £30 one, and the £2.99 is just as good!!
MARTIN R
£9.99 max for these. Expensive ones are a con. Agree... I used to sell Monster cables for £50 a pop and the output quality was no different to a £10 cable imo

scotty71
I bought a QED Scart cable for 70 notes for my laserdisc player back in the day:D, the difference was outstanding. Still got it and my Monster SVHS lead amongst others. I usually dont skimp on cabling as it is just as important as the A/V gear itself. For HDMI though (digital) I would go middle of the road as said 20 notes or so

I was a general manager for the above said, the only reason this pushed is massive margin I really could not see the difference in quality, again its an opinion and maybe some would disagree but a £5 or less cable would deliver the same in terms of what I would see viewing
Keith C
£10 max. A really crappy HDMI cable will give a worse signal than one that's well put together (note that I didn't say expensive, just well made) as while HDMI is digital it does also use error-checking to correct for poor signal, as not all of the signal has to make it for there to be a picture. The worse the received signal, the harder the ECC has to work, which could possibly manifest in a drop in the sound or picture quality. But you can get perfectly well made cables for a few notes, certainly much less than the stupid money that high street or 'specialist' shops seem to want to sell you one for. I picked up a two-pack of decent ones from Costco for £15, no problems at all.
pistonbroke
Got in an argument with a guy at comet once about this. I knew already that a HDMI cable (providing it's 1.3 compliant) is as good as any other HDMI cable. I went in and asked for one, and he gestures to a selection of overpriced hugely thick cables. I think the cheapest of them was £30, and the range topped out at £100. I asked if he had any cheaper ones and he said "whats it for". I explained it was for my home cinema stuff, and he suggested I go for the £100 jobby. I politely told him where to stick it and he pointed over to two identical LED screens. He says the one on the left is running the cheaper cable, the one on right is running the expensive one. "Bull" I say, "it doesn't say yesterday on my birth certificate mate", to which he retorts "well if you're willing to settle for second best, go for the cheaper one....". It's not that they were close in quality, one one running HD, the other was SD. I warn him about false advertising being against the law and he nods re-itterating his bull about expensive leads. I walked over to the screens, tilted the left one forward and he comes over flapping "no sir, don't touch them, you'll set the alarm off". As he gets to my right shoulder the TV goes black, and I emerge from the back of the set with the S-video lead in my hand. I shook my head, looked at him and said "prick". Then left. Ah, so that's their trick. I always wondered why the pictures on different tvs at Comet etc. seemed to have completely different pictures. To be honest the picture on my tv has never been tht bad at all.

Wow, that's actually fraud. I can't believe that would go on at such a large retailer's.
