SupraStar 3000
I'm trying to work out the most cost efficient way to transfer a personal reg plate to another car, but its proving very difficult. I own a car with a private registration. The car is insured, MOTed and taxed. I now want to sell this car and keep private registration. To sell the car i need to keep it insured so I can offer test drives and generally use up until the day its sold. I also own a second car (with V5) which I want to transfer the registration too. This car is on private land and SORN with no insurance as I can't afford to insure both at the same time. Will transfer insurance from the first car to this after its sold and then apply for road tax. Problem is, I can't transfer the registration to a car thats not taxed and insured. To retain the number its going to cost £105 but i dont see why I should spend that considering I own both cars and plate with everything to be swapped over after the sale of the car. Seems crazy to have to pay for the privilege. I suppose I could insure the 2nd car for only a few days, just to process the tax and transfer procedure, but that too is going to be very expensive. So, I'm in a bit of a quandary as to know what to do. Any advice people.

Homer
I was in a similar situation a good few years ago, the only viable option was to place it on retention until the 2nd car was MOT'd. As Gary says, the cost is the same either way
SupraStar 3000
but the other car is MOT'd mate. Just not taxed or insured.
Suprash
As far as Im aware it doesnt matter if the car isnt insured or tax'd, as long as its then sorn. The car must be in MOT to transfere from/to. My ex had this issue, wanted to transfere a plate from a car that hadnt been MOT'd in many years, and would never see an MOT station again, but she couldnt, I dont recall there be any issues around tax/insurance though. Chris Wilson
Just put it on retention, dealing with the bureaucracy involved with Swansea is not worth it to save £25, trust me
