Squeeking inside cam belt cover

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I seem to have a kind of high pitch squeek / faint rattling noise coming from inside the cam belt cover. You can mainly hear this on start up from cold, but not always. But i can very slightly hear it at other times to, but very intermittant.

I have done the tipex test on the crank pulley and it hasnt moved at all.

Any ideas what could cause this in this area?

Cheers

I have no idea Caseys, its been pointed out to me whilst the car has been in having a few bits done lately. At first i thought it was going to be the crank pulley, but that seems fine.

Which one is the pre-tensioner pulley, say from this diagram? http://www.mkivsupra.net/vbb/attachment.php?attachmentid=13964&d=1112559911

The crank pulley is the blue one in that pic isnt it, was slightly unsure by the arrow.

Is this bad? what are the effects of it squeeking?

It's the one directly above the crank pulley chap (right under the blue cover)

edit : Not known one to fail drastically, but of course it's keeping the tension in the belt for you... so no tension = bad.

Sorry went searching for a part number as I sold one a little while ago but my for sale thread must've gone in the last forum housekeeping. About £105-109 new iirc, Whifbitz or Keron may be able to do cheaper than OEM from Mr.T, but always worth asking Mr.T for a cheeky discount :)

Thank you mate. Not sure what to do with that then apart from keep my eye on it :)

Well as said, I don't know what happens when it fails, but they do wear and squeak.

If you don't have tension in that belt be aware that you won't have things like oil pressure / water pressure possibly... or an alternator. I'm sure some of those are pretty much vital :D

Hopefully someone will be along soon to tell us what happens when they fail, always replaced mine when they started getting noisy.

Also when did you replace your aux belt?

I havent changed any belts myself on the car yet. When the last service was done a few hundred miles agao i checked the cambelt replacement with b'have and he said that was about 10k ago.

Have just been doing some searching on here, so this is also known as the aux belt tensioner? I presume it is the bearings failing in it that cause the squeek?

Correct and correct :) I believe CW here can refurb them if required too.... refurb or uprate iirc.

Aux belt is circa £60-70 from memory, more expensive than the cam belt!

If your on about the Aux belt tensioner then i just bought one from Steve Manley and discounted cost me £123 inc vat

Take the tension off remove the belt and see if its got any play in the bearing, also spin it by hand and you might hear it squeeking

If it fails you will lose the water pump, power steering pump, alternator and a/c

Thanks for the heads up DNK

My pleasure, for your info Whifbitz quoted me £160 + vat for the tensioner !

Steve Manleys def worth a call, if you can't get any decent discount let me know and i'll sort one out for you.

I have a brand new one sat here if your in desperate need but usually SM gets parts in a couple of days.
