I have a daily 200 mile commute to work at the moment, i have a 1.8 vauxhall vectra at the moment thinking of getting shot of it and getting something more economical.

So i need economical, not to small, not to slow, have been looking for a vw golf 150 tdi but they are quite hard to find for a reasonable price

What other cars should i consider

thanks:D

MK4 1.9 TDI owner here :)

45mpg around town, 58mpg on the motorway, 88mpg in 5th @ 50mph :-)

Can get a non GT-TDI and remap it quite easily, the only benefits of the 130-150 GT-TDI are the 6-speed box, but then you're looking at a higher insurance group just for that luxury. Quite possible to get 190+bhp & 300+lb/ft torque with a new turbo + intercooler + map.

Nice car bar the horrors of if a door lock fails (they're prone to that) ... cutting the old lock out is really really bad to do.

Otherwise look at the classifieds on http://uk-mkivs.net/

Oh and get a post 2001 model, lot of changes on the PD engines after that iirc.

For a 200 mile roundtrip I would say get a car that will give you the best mileage if you have to pay for yourself. And is comfy to drive. I do 80 miles per day and averaging 4000KM's per month.

Maybe the somewhat older styled Mazda 3 or maybe if you have enough spare dough the IS220 or Mazda 6. Or maybe the BMW 1 series, these are very econical and yet sporty.

I myself would not go for a VW, but that is personal taste.

I recently went shopping for my new company car (paid by the company) and in the end chose for the mazda 6 (cheaper for myself personally per month).

Let us know what you decide upon and for what reason.

Dog car FTW

EDIT, wrong Gaz

:D that was the most economical car I've ever owned.

To the OP, how about a Mondeo diesel? They're a brilliant car, well built and quite dynamic but still cheap to run and quite spacious. They do a high-end STTDI version which sounds like would suit you nicely.

I have had the following work cars of late

Passat 2.0 Tdi Sport 140 Bhp

Audi A3 1.9 Tdi 105 Bhp

Ford Mondeo 115 Tdi

Audi A4 S-line 2.0 Tdi 143

They were all good in different ways but the surpringly the A3 was one of the most enjoyable to drive. Dreadfully slow around town but on the motorway returned about 60 Mpg.

The Mondeo should also be considered. I really battered mine and it never let me down once. I now have the A4 and it looks great but the Mpg is not as good as they make out.

A friend has just got the new Civic Type S 2.2 i-CDTi Diesel Gaz.

  • 138 BHP,
  • 251 lb/ft
  • Average 54.3 mpg
  • 0-62 in 8.3

It goes well, handles better than I thought it would with little roll, really nice and comfortable interior. He's getting 50+ MPG out of it too.

Ooh, Mrs H had a BMW 320d Coupe. Now that was the shizz. 55 Mpg and 0 - 60 in 8.6 seconds.....;)

I have to say these 120/320D's have suprised me on numerous occasions now, as they often look quite sporty and go well such that when i've seen the badge i've expected it to be more 325/330i.......

up to 7k really, both mpg and comfort with a little power a bonus;)

This is a good bet, you have some power with the 2.0 lump but being the diesel you have more lower grunt and even more better mpg. They are fairly comfortable drives as well, quite smooth and quiet compared to other more premium cars.

Something with a lot more space, looks very good, bit of power but good fuel returns!

Now for a bit of luxury! I'd go with this...lovely motorway runners.
