Oddball87 Posted August 3, 2010 Share Posted August 3, 2010 Hi all, On sunday my mate Ash in his NA and myself in my Supra were out for a drive, We were on an nice bit of road so we opened the cars up abit, I then looked in my mirror to see his Supra disappearing, A few sec's later a big ass cloud of Blue/Grey smoke pissing out the back of his Car we pulled to the side of the Road checked the car over could not see or hear anything wrong with it. He said he didnt feel any power loss or anything like that, Then we went on are way and it seemed normal. Anyone got any idears? Valve stem seals maybe? stevie_b Posted August 3, 2010 Share Posted August 3, 2010 (edited) Blue smoke indicates oil out of the exhaust, consistent with worn valve stem seals. Grey smoke: not sure, white smoke usually means water vapour though (i.e. coolant). Get him to check the level of oil and coolant. stevie_b Posted August 3, 2010 Share Posted August 3, 2010 Not much damage AFAIK but I wouldn't just take my word for it. I guess a lot of oil going through the cats would contaminate them over time....? As for cost, no idea really. Each seal is probably only a few quid (again, a guess) but there's 24 of them and it'll be the labour costs that will bump it up. stevie_b Posted August 3, 2010 Share Posted August 3, 2010 In that case, add "get the error codes from the ECU" to the fluid checks. TBH he should do these checks before he drives it at all. Ian C Posted August 3, 2010 Share Posted August 3, 2010 Grey/black smoke is unburnt fuel Is it the engine light that comes on or the red ! light when he floors it? If it's the ! light, it'll probably be low brake fluid. If it is the engine light or the ! light stays on, it's probably the speed sensor, and the diagnostic code check described in the links will show that up. Valve stem seals can weep out oil for years and not cause a problem. You usually get a puff of blue smoke and a smell of burning oil when pulling away after being sat for a while - the vacuum in the cylinders when idling draws the oil in and the acceleration burns it.
