Supra-Brett
OK all, ive got this odd problems that only happens on startup. Basically i get this metallic sounding "squeek". It actually sounds more like metal on metal which is obvioulsy never good. It doesnt happen when driving at any speed or any revs. Im thinking it could be a bearing of some kind on the starter ? or one of the pulleys ? Engine oil is fine, and gearbox oil has been changed regularly and Clutch is almost new (1 year old). Basically im not sure what moving parts are causing this noise. any ideas ? Nic
Get someone to start it whilst you check under the bonnet where the noise is coming from, it could be crankshaft pulley from your description.

Chris Wilson
Crank damper or auxiliary belt tensioner would be my first ports of call. Then PAS pump bearings and alternator bearings. If the A/C is on at start up turn it off and see if the noise disappears, that would suggest the A/C pump clutch is faulty.
Supra-Brett
A/C pump not on at start up. im going to do the tip ex test tomorrow to check
Chris Wilson
Take the aux belt off before you next start it. No noise = you have limited the possible causes substantially.
Supra-Brett
Take the aux belt off before you next start it. No noise = you have limited the possible causes substantially. That assumes i have even a basic knowledge of how to do that lol. I can understand the theory, but wouldnt know how to do it These any good ? http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Toyota-Supra-Lexus-CS-GS300-RX300-Engine-Crank-Pulley-/220468804533?cmd=ViewItem&pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item3354f6fbb5
Chris Wilson
No, it isn't a damper at all, it's just a machined alloy pulley. Fit a new stock one. Be sure to change the cam belt and water pump, if they haven't been knowingly changed in the last 60,000 miles and check the oil pump seal whist someone is down there. Crank oil seal, water pump bush and rocker cover gaskets were changed a year ago. Is that what you meant by water pump ? After reading the article on crank pulleys, i now see why its no good. Like you say its just alloy, with no rubber and therefore no damping which means more resonance. When an ite such as that is fitted, how bad is it ? The cam belt needs doing so if it odes turn out to be the crank pulley i will change that at the same time.
Chris Wilson
You would probably feel no difference at all, but the crank would, and on a manual it may excite some gear train noise.
Supra-Brett
Well ive done the test and its defo the crank pulley. need a new one now if anyone has one ?
Purity14
Usually just over the £200 from Toyota, but there are traders who have them, but they are similar prices afaik, you may as well change the belt while you are there too. Oh and once fitted, why not pre-tipex it, and you can include it in your weekly checks - you are lucky in that it made a sound before flying off. Ps, dont drive the car. Supra-Brett
well ive just been quoted £180 to fit a new cambelt, tensioners etc, and the new crank pulley and aux belt (i supply all parts obviously) Is this a good price ?
Purity14
Are you happy to pay that price?
Supra-Brett
Are you happy to pay that price? lol - no i want to pay £2.50:). i just havent got a clue how long that job will take, but it seems a lot for what is effectivley changing a cam belt (because i understand that the crank pulley needs to be removed to do that anyway). Just wanted to know if it was reasonable for that amount of work ?
Chris Wilson
I charge £150, but not if customers supply their own parts
Purity14
I be happy with £180 tbh, Id pay that, considering the garage isnt making a profit on all the parts.
Abz
The crank pulley can be a really pain in the back side to change, so hence the labour charge, try your luck with £150 Just make sure the place you are going to, knows what they are doing! Pay cheap, pay twice.
