Atmosphere at work - Good or Dire???

Of late the atmosphere in my team at work has really taken a downturn, I now dread coming into work and sitting in silence for hours on end, no one chats, there is tension and no one has a laugh anymore and there is no real cause for this happening. How does everyone else find the team they work in? Im an analyst so a lot of my work does require maximum concentration but this is ridiculous at the moment and its getting me down...its such a depressing atmosphere :(

That's normal for investment banking research where I am (like you I work with 7 analysts) - no-one really talks or asks how your weekend was (they genuinely generally don't care less - at least they are honest about it and not ask for the sake of asking in that regard). I have no idea if some of my team members have kids or are married and been working with them for nearly 2 years.

Has changed my mindset a lot unfortunately as I was shocked how these people work like that for 14 hours a day. After 5 years of this I am now used to it :(

I work in the big boss room with... you guessed it, my boss. So we get a chat on sometimes, but we are normally too busy to talk. Other than that, most days I work from home, so you guys are my social time from time to time.

I do often go out for lunch and sometimes I do often meet up with his family as I know them all. So it's pretty easy for me really.

Party time here at my work, lots for trips to the pubs at lunch with free meals and we have a games room with 360 and wii :)

Work for Google? :)

We never stop talking all day, always having a laugh, it's the thing I'll miss most when I leave

^ That. Etiher we're working and talking/joking, or if I really need to concentrate I put my earphones on, stick IM on do-not-disturb and plough on with a good bit of work.

Sounds like you work in a herd, rather than a team. Can't say I envy you Mikey and hope things improve, or at the very least you're in a job that doesn't require teamwork!

Depends what Shift we are taking over from, but me and my Shift Manager get on really well, TBH we just take the mickey out of each other all day.

Some of the other shifts think that we hate each other as we're always larking about, but couldn't be further from the truth... Those long night shifts are mighty lonely.. :eyebrows::sly::blink:

I would say my current workplace is probably the best place I've ever worked. I work in research, so there are moments where we need a few hours to concentrate and focus on data quality but at the same time I can listen to music while checking said data (Disturbed FTW!). We all go out at least once a month, either for someones birthday, retirement or just any ole excuse. We also go to the pub as a pack, usually every other Friday. Next to me right now, I have a putter, a rugby ball and a football. The balls fly across the room and as for the putter, we tend to randomly do twisted mini golf challenges, i.e. who can get it in the whole from....across the building. No winners yet.

The last place was awful. A tiny backwater research agency who's researchers thought they were the dogs danglies because they had every ESOMAR / MRS award concieveable. The people would happily stab you in the back for a bourbon biscuit and regularly suffered from 'factionalism.'

sounds to me like your workplace needs some good oldfashioned bullying. Single someone out and throw paper and flick rubber bands at them.

ok. maybe not :p

Its always nice to have a bit of banter though.

At my last place we were incredibly childish. One xmas we were bored so make a massive rubber band ball. it was about twice the size of a tennis ball and quite heavy. then one of the girls got annoyed at us bouncing it off the desks to eachother and took it away and dismantled it. destroying a few days work. So we hid all her pink stationary.

We also made a little mascot out of paperclips and other random bits of wire and stuff you would find in a techy type office. He was about 6 inches tall. We called him station-tron.

The place im at now the programmers upstairs have a train set that runs arround the desks that carries sweets. Its got buildings and scenery and everything. They take it appart and display it at local model train shows sometimes.

In my old place we raced them little £20 RC helicopters around a circuit, that was fun.

Jokes include filling pens with washing up liquid (for the pen biters)

Fake emails

Creating batch files that do crazy things on startup

Loading backdoors (wormhole) onto peoples pc's so we can run 1000 calculators on someones pc from the other side of the office

Locking the cleaners in the toilets and turning the lights off

Making the best boiled meal you can from just a kettle. (Boiled potatos gammon and veg) was my best

plugging mice and keyboards into the wrong computer..

..

Wow then there is the horrible stuff :)

We used to have a good laugh in our old office. It was a partition based office and we had our own little bit where we could have a great laugh in without disturbing anyone. Then we got a new head of Dept. who came in and changed everything. Earlier this year we moved to a new Office complex and he played a massive part in its design, its all very white with matching desks, paper trays etc and all very open plan. The atmosphere and dynamics have changed completely now and the new guy (who incidentally is a great bloke, but just a little anal over certain issues) gets a little wound up if we stray from the norm.

I guess I am lucky though as I am in charge of my own team and they are mostly in the field, so that gives me the chance to get out or do field work as and when I wish.
