Lbm
I'm not quite sure where to place Bill Shatner. I like him. If only he hadn't done TJ Hooker. Always liked Tom Selleck particularly as Magnum. And weirdly of late, I think Jude Law is quite handy. And for all you Goldblum haters, he's certainly unique and not too shabby imho. Swampy442
Good call on Pitt and Oldman Mike See Nick Cage has a part in the new Sorcerers Apprentice movie. Wonder which former character he'll play, the bloke from Face Off, the bloke from Con Air...
Mike
I don't mind Nick Cage tbh... Leaving Las Vegas was *amazing* (I cried like a girl at the end ) and Wild at Heart was awesome too ..but I agree, the action stuff he's done is a bit rubbish. AndrewOW
I thought Nick Cage was excellent in Kick Ass. No mention of Christian Slater yet? I've always enjoyed his films. And John Lithgow is great at drama or comedy, IMO. There are, of course, loads of good actors, and most of my favourites have been mentioned here already. Anthony Hopkins puts in a good effort in all his films. Harrison Ford has to have a mention. I don't really have a worst, as if I don't fancy the film, I won't watch it, etc.

Matt H
Good thread. Some of my fav actors include: - Christian Bale - Kevin Spacey - Ant Hopkins - Denzel Washington - Brad Pitt - Will Smith - Sam L Jack - John Travolta - Jodie Foster I can't stand Hugh Grant and I'm not a big fan of Tom Hanks either. Matt H
Worst: Steven Seagal Ben Stiller Adam Sandler Just my opinion I'd go with those too.
Tannhauser
Great thread. Sticking to the theme of "Mainly American/English male actors active in the 1970s onwards. Terrible: Adam Sandler (totally charmless) Robson Greene (not usually in film, but 'Wire in the blood' series is classically bad) Keanu Reeves (deep as a summer puddle) Nick Cage (but then he always has lousy scripts and 'Wild at Heart' an exception) Here's a few that I think are actually pretty good at the sort of thing they do, and know their limitations: Harrison Ford Michael Caine George Clooney Russell Crowe Eastwood Schwarzenegger (perfect in first Terminator,) Stallone I like Mike's best list, with a couple of edits. Robert De Niro Robert Duvall Dennis Hopper Ray Winstone Dustin Hoffman Marlon Brando Brad Pitt Ed Norton Tim Roth Harvey Keitel Steve Buscemi Jack Nicholson I will add: Rod Steiger Gene Hackman Robert Downey Jr (adds a bit of sparkle to most things) Kevin Bacon (liked him in 'The Woodsman') Sean Penn (liked him in 'Milk') Out of the British stable: John Hurt Ian McKellen Ralph Fiennes Anthony Hopkins ...And in the 'surely not' category: Tom Cruise (He's good, he just does ridiculous films) BRIAN 'WHAAAATTT?' BLESSED (I, Claudius, Branagh's Hamlet) Bjork (Dancer in the Dark)
supra_aero
Antohony Hopkins & Kevin Bacon, how could we forget about them?? LoL @ Adam Sandler - feel sorry for him in this thread. Think Ed Norton and De Niro are the overall best actors mentioned so far who have playeed the most diverse roles in my opinion. Ed Norton is the hulk afterall. And Robert De Niro in the awakenings. Wow. He was simply awesome.

Mike
I like Mike's best list Good call on Sean Penn I think you should check out Leaving Las Vegas, Mike Figgis (of Stormy Monday fame) directs... and Elizabeth Shue stars along side Cage. It's a cracker. I guarantee you *will* cry at this... or you're a machine! It's a difficult film to get through, having seen it a couple of times now.. it's not one I go back to likely. It stays with you for a bit.

Scott
Choosing for acting skill and nothing to do with whether I like them or their movies... Tom Hanks (The guy goes above and beyond) Antony Hopkins Johnny Depp Gene Hackman Robert Downey Jr Ed Norton Robert Duval Jack Nicholson Robert De Niro Denzel Washington My personal favourites due to roles etc.. Robert Downey Jr - Sherlock Holmes Denzel Washington - Man on Fire Jick Nicholson - One flew over the Cuckoos nest. Dustin Hoffman - Rainman Daniel Day Lewis - My Left Foot & Gangs of New York Tom Hanks - Forrest Gump Ed Norton - American History X Robin Williams - Good Will Hunting Matt Damon - Good Will Hunting Morgan Freeman - The Shawshank Redemption Those are off the top of my head though. I'm sure I have many more favourites. 10 Worst... Keanu Reeves - Pretty much everything other than Bill & Ted as it is him to a T. Hulk Hogan - Suburban Commando Steven Segal - Everything Ben Affleck - Everything Nicolas Cage - Everything other than Leaving Las Vegas & Gone in 60 Ice Cube - Everything J Lo - Everything, although I do enjoy watching her. Paul Walker - Everything. Been in some good films though, Running scared is my favourite. Queen Latifa - Everything Keaunu Reeves - He's that bad. I actually struggled with that. No doubt, even in my own opinion, that list would be different if I had an extensive list to pick from.
Rich
How can anyone not say Kevin Spacey is not a good actor after American Beauty and LA Confidential?? H. I thought he was also excellent in K-PAX .

You have under-rated Matt Damon not crediting him with the fantastic bourne series. Those are off the top of my head though. I'm sure I have many more favourites. 10 Worst... Scott
Pretty much agree with everything there. You have under-rated Matt Damon not crediting him with the fantastic bourne series. The movies themselves are great but the character I felt was very wooden. Easy enough for just about anyone to act out so I didn't mention them based on acting merit @ hogan - great pick of bad actors. Queen Latifa was good in set it off though, otherwise again you have it to a T. Hulk Hogan and Ice Cube are certainly not actors either - I actually got my cubes mixed up, I meant Ice T. Although Ice cube would be very very high up on the worst list too. When I bought my car there was an Ice T DVD in it. I was REALLY bored driving home so I stuck it on for something to basically listen to. It lasted about 5 mins and I HAD to turn it off. I think it is called corrupt or something like that. Try and get your hands on it just out of curiosity

Tannhauser
I think you should check out Leaving Las Vegas Not seen it to my recollection. I don't mind 'difficult' films; they're usually the ones worth watching. Have you seen Adaptation? I thought he was brilliant in that. Again, not seen it to my recollection. I'll keep an eye out for it. Jack Nicholson - One flew over the Cuckoos nest. Good call. I think the whole ensemble are brilliant, especially Nicholson, Louise Fletcher, and Will Sampson. Going back a bit further, likewise for 12 Angry Men.
