Ian Huntley to claim damages.

After surviving the attempt to kill him by slashing his throat, Huntley is to make claims amounting to nearly £100,000.

Not one penny of our taxes should be spent on this. It must be thrown out. It is already costing too much to keep the sick little creep alive.

I think there should be public voting for stuff like this, it would show angry the nation is.

He is claiming £100k but the case will cost in excess of £1m, surely that tax payers money should go else where.

Whole heartedly agree Wez, the costs of doing this will be astronomical. If at any point he has to come out to attend a court the security cost would be silly money.

Basically he should be more careful when shaving and hold the blade himself. Accidents do happen.:innocent:

When you commit crimes as so abhorrent as his, you should for go all but the most basic of rights. He is still alive, can breathe, eat and sleep, can't see he deserves any more.

The government would not agree to public making decisions about this. How ever a little youtube campaign managed to piss of Mr Cowell at Christmas. That got loads of media attention, in the UK and in other parts of the world. Surely something similar could be done.

This is what is actually wrong with the whole county. This guy has put himself in this position. He was convicted of a shocking crime, lured two girls to their death, took advantage of their trust and I suppose no one will ever know what his motives were...

He then ends up as a hated figure in prison. The perfect solution would have been for him to have been held up by his balls for a day and then peeled with a hot spoon and dipped in boiling lemon juice..!! No such luck. He gets pampered in prison and because someone decided to issue some good old fashioned justice on his ass, he thinks that 100K will fix things...!!

FFS..!! I really hope this doesn't run it's full course or this country really is a joke. I am all for human rights but you agree to give up your human rights when you invite two young girls into your house with the intention of abusing/murdering them. What possible advantage to society is there keeping this evil cnut alive??

I actually see this as quite interesting.

He is in prision and rightly so. Personally I think the death penalty should be brought back in the Uk and he should get the rope... its what everyone wants and it is cost effective.

That said:

Why should an offence committed stop any person in principle being able to claim for something else that happened to them that was unconnected to the offence they committed?

If you applied the principle to huntley, the courts would probably have to apply the same principle to everyone... for example would people feel different if the person injured was a man imprisioned for assisting his wifes suicide or an OAP who has put in prision for a day for not paying her council tax (and was subsequently assaulted and/or raped). My view is that even though he doesn't deserve to be breathing, and he deserved in my opinion what he got, I think we need to be careful about setting precedents about preventing people having legal redress due to unrelated incidents.

Also, lets be blunt, even though he deserved what he got, it should not be happening in prision and someone clearly isn't doing their job right.

Also, comments re 100k and millions in legal fees..... rubbish.

............there is a claim procedure and rightly so in some cases but in this particular case there should have been no one willing to progress/process this claim, it should have been conveniently lost/ignored......I mean what is he going to do? who is he going to complain to? perhaps he'll complete another claim to just get ignored again......someone somewhere has moved this sort of thing along and IMO they shouldn't have. In this case I say flout the rules/law it's not like anyone is going to really push for Huntley to get his compensation is it?

Only quoting what I read, it looks like I was wrong and I should have said nearly £100K.

This quote form"Independent" online

"A Ministry of Justice spokesman said: Ian Huntley is bringing a claim against the Ministry of Justice following an assault by another prisoner.

"The claim is currently being vigorously defended."

The former school caretaker, who murdered the 10-year-old friends in Cambridgeshire in 2002, was left scarred by the attack at Frankland Prison, Co Durham.

He is alleged to have been attacked with a razor blade by Damien Fowkes and needed hospital treatment.

Earlier this year, then justice secretary Jack Straw said the government had "absolutely no intention" of paying compensation to Huntley over the attack.

The comments, at Commons question time, came as it emerged that Huntley could be awarded up to £20,000 in compensation if he sued for negligence.

It was reported last night that Huntley could claim nearly £100,000 in damages in a case that could cost tax payers more than £1 million in legal aid fees.

He is said to be seeking £20,000 for injuries and £60,000 for authorities failing in their duty of care, the Daily Mail said.

The newspaper also said he is expected to claim a further £15,000 through the Criminal Injuries Compensation Authority.

No paperwork in relation to the matter is believed to have been received by the body, however."
