Smallshinyant
Hi all, Just seen a job advertised that i would be silly not to put a CV in for. My CV is a few years out of date so I have just been updating with my latest details and jobs. Problem is i think its reading a little bit to long(just hit 4 pages so probably far to long). Problem is i think my experience suits me perfectly for this job but having trouble getting this down. Any employers out there, have any pet hate's that make you throw out a CV straight away? or anybody have and advice in general about CV presentation? many thanks Alex
JustGav
CV's all depend on the job position.... I'm in IT and I see about 4 or 5 different styles, not sure what works and doesn't really, as I skim them to see if the person has anything that interests me... pick the few that make me go 'Hmmmm, interesting' and then discard the rest. Smallshinyant
Funny enough going for an IT job. I guess i will try have to make sure i highlight the parts where my experience matches what they are asking for.
supra_aero
Longer than 2 pages is too long. 2 pages is the max it should be.
Smallshinyant
Longer than 2 pages is too long. 2 pages is the max it should be. Size 3 font is not going to cut it is it? back to the editing board. At least i have something with everything in so i guess i can cut it down to suit any job that comes up. Mcgoo
At least i have something with everything in so i guess i can cut it down to suit any job that comes up. That's exactly what you should do. Every CV should be tailored to each job application. Go through it and choose the most relevant parts, and as said try to keep to 2 pages. Abz
I use to help with the recruitments in IT while I was at Deloitte. I'd go for 2 pages and they would have to be very good for me to look at a 3 page CV. I think where people go wrong is right down all the jobs they had including the ones in school and listing the things they did. Be brief and straight to the point, don't do large chucks of text, which was another one of my pet hates. What sort of role in IT are you going for? Smallshinyant
Thanks for the offers guys, i will take you up on them . I am just going through the whole thing myself again, just to see if i can see any waffling that is not needed.

Yeah, im clearly putting too much in writing and need to work out what are my key strengths/experiences that are going to be relevant. Just going to print out a copy and get a red pen. JustGav
Excellent, thank you. Looks like i need a complete redesign. I have not even put anything about my personal life. Statements such as 'i have a hobby where I hang around with weirdos on the net and sniff petrol fumes' usually don't help

Smallshinyant
Has taken a long time to come back, but the company i sent this CV to has come back and offered me an interview, yay! So my next question how do I prepare for an interview? I am going to be brief on this as I have food waiting for me... Confidence, be confident & alert, firm handshakes etc, good eye contact. Be smart, you can never over dress for an internet. I found white shirt with yellow tie works very well & a nice suit. Don't ramble, don't fidget, don't wonder around the room, DON'T BE LATE! Okay, I'll have to come back to this, but that is the basics
Purity14
Be smart, you can never over dress for an internet. NEVER am I too underdressed for the internet. I'm laying in bed with my full penquin suit, it only comes off when I LOG off.
Josh
Good luck with the interview. I'm also searching for a job but with no experience I'm only getting call backs about crappy, minimum wage jobs. Anyone want to hire me?

Nervous and excited. So my next question how do I prepare for an interview? Well done mate . A few more tips to add to Abz list: If your not at a desk don't move your seat closer as that is the space that the interviewer feels comfortable Get to know about the company (they will ask you questions on it) Ask your own questions at the end. Sit strait & don't slouch Speak loud & clear. Alot of peoples voice starts loud but fades away. Just stay calm & tell them what they want to hear & you should be fine. Best of luck mate, hope it goes great for you.
Purity14
Practice handshakes with your friends. The ammount of people that give wet lettuice handshakes that I come across is crazy, they go right down in my estimation at that point.
