hodge
I'm at the stage with my project where I need to start looking for a diff but I'm a bit clueless on what diff to get. Now I know I'm going to need a pre-facelift 6 speed as I've converted the car from an N/A auto to 6 speed big single BUT, I've been reading there's large casing and small casing diffs, LSD diffs, torsion diffs etc etc. Which should I use. I already have a 6 speed prop but will I need driveshafts for the diff or will the originals from the car be ok. Thanks John
Wez
Are you just changing the internals?
hodge
Nah was just gona stick a whole diff in. I didn't know I could just change the internals. I've offered my prop up to the diff and the hole pcd on the prop is bigger than the diff.
hodge
Anymore input guys. I could really do with a hand here.
JamieP
You will need a large casing diff, pre facelift 6 speed, hard to find in the uk as they are normally sold as part of a 6 speed kit and not cheap either, id look on Jurgens yahoo site or check out supraforum.com, they come up a lot more often over there but sell for around $1500 I have a feeling you need to change one of the driveshafts but cant remember for sure now, its been a while since i messed about with diffs, Dude or Keron might be worth a call to confirm. Might even be worth checking with Steve manley what a new case costs and bung in a TRD LSD.
hodge
I had a feeling this was gona cost me a lot on money Jamie. I have considered buying a crashed 6 speed and breaking it. If I can't get hold of 1 this may be the answer. Is there anyway of changing the flange on the front of the diff or even the prop so my 6 speed prop will mate upto the N/A diff. Simply to get the car running so I can pull it out the garage to get a car in to break. Extreme I know but doable I think.
hodge
Also will an auto diff mate upto a 6 speed prop. Sorry for all the questions lol.
JamieP
No, auto prop is different to the 6 speed prop, you might be able to change the flange to use the na diff you have but id not advise it, it wont last 2 min and will make a mess of the floor when it lets go. hodge
Think I'll have a trawl through Jurgens yahoo auctions site tonight. I might end up lucky. Cheers for the help Jamie. Just to clarify I'm gona need a large casing LSD. Thanks again.

Yup i would, if on a budget you could use a auto tt lsd but it wont drive very nice imo, with a big turbo like yours you would need a very high rev limit to get away with it and id not advise that with your engine spec mate. Wez
Normally when upgrading the diff it is just the internals you change Its becoming a common conversion for people to go the other way now, ie to the smaller casing as there are different ratios available for less top end and more acceleration, there are a few on here that have already done it, Ryan, Pig, Gledo and TLicence to name a couple I recently purchased an NA auto diff which is the small casing but have not yet got round to sourcing new driveshafts with ABS rings. hodge
I'd rather do the job right first time Jamie if you know what I mean. I havnt really compromised on the build so far it would be a shame to let the car down by fitting parts not suited to eachother.
pistonbroke
I'd just contact Jurgen, though his auction sites are great to browse through. If you're looking for specifics, I find it impossible. He'll be able to get one for sure, probably at a good price too. Especially considering he's just sold a whole low mileage (7000miles IIRC) engine with all ancillaries with turbos for £1600 :blink

Now you've thrown an iron in the fire. So how will all this work then. Just pull the internals out and replace them with updated ones. I'm not looking to do any top speed runs I prefer the acceleration factor. If I go this route will as Jamie said, I have to have a high rev limit or will it run ok. And what do I do about the issue of the 6 speed prop not mating upto the n/a casing flange.
Wez
Sorry I am not sure if Paul Whiffin has done any of these conversion, he may know though.
hodge
ive trawled through over 100 pages of yahoo auctions and cant find a 6 speed pre-facelift diffs for a supra at all. There are some for aristos and soarers and some V161 facelift diffs there but im not sure if they will fit. Does anyone know?????????????? JamieP
6 speed facelift diffs are small casing but will at least give you the correct gearing, to go with auto gearing with your turbo and engine spec would be a big mistake imo.
pistonbroke
I have a v160 pre facelift 6sp diff.......£12000, and you get a free supra attached to it

Small casing are supposedly not as strong, you might need a facelift 6 speed prop and all as iirc the bolt spacing on the flange is different between the na and tt small case props, you might be able to swap the diff flanges around though, not sure on that one. hodge
aks jamie to look on yahoo for diffs hes looked onthere before...or i will have a gander later I've looked through over 100 pages and can't find 1 for a prefacelift 6 speed TT. But if you can be added to have a look I might have missed something. Sounds like a massive chew on and a lot of trial and error if I go down that route. Think I night just hold out for the right diff. I've got plenty more to be getting on with until 1 turns up. Let's hope Jurgen comes up trumps lol.

James
Keep an eye on the US Supraforums? Surely if a lot of them are carrying out projects with big V8 swaps and similar they'll be chopping and changing diffs and the like? You'll get for a good price from there too I'd imagine? Maybe giving Dusty (MVP) a shout would be an idea also? If he doesn't have anything to offer, he may be a good candidate for recommending where else to look? Best of luck regardless!
