The Raven
Must have pulled it in my sleep. Hurts like hell, cant turn my head without it hurting my right lower shoulder all the way down my arm. Ive broken bones that hurt less i have deep heated it and taken the day off work, not sure i could hang on to the drill if i was to "catch" it wrong. Anyone got a good idea how to help it? Dont really want to bother the doctors with it yet.
stevie_b
Ibuprofen is a muscle anti-inflammatory. Not sure if it'll help here though. I would either go to your GP or just rest it up: don't "test" it by trying to stretch it out (been there, done that).

Supralad
Im training as a personal training in my spare time out of the gym so im learning about this kinda thing, so bare with me. If you can try and work out what muscle is it, or if you could explain a little more where it is and what kind of pain your getting i could try and help. Just below my right shoulder about 2 inches from my neck. The painis when i try to move my head in any direction. The pain goes from my neck to my right arm. Also getting a tingle pins and needles feeling in the area. Mophine would do about now, i think i would take a large object to the head to stop the pain. Like i said ive broken bones that didnt hurt this much. If it dont ease im going to the docs tomorrow.

If the pain is really that bad, you should go docs but im suer they will only give you tabs for the pain and say rest. If you have a loving wife/girlfriend you could ask for a massage as this sometimes releaves the pain or can help but more a sports massage not a nice one It will hurt but you just apply a lot of hard pressure to the area. Also put ice/bag of peas over the area that hurts for about 15mins every hour or so and then try and keep it compressed with a bandage but this might be too difficult as its in an awkward position. But like i said, if it feels worse than a broken bone you should go docs just incase.

caseys
You could have a trapped nerve where you've slept in an awkward position and slightly crushed it. Try some NSAIDS like ibruprofen and a really good warm bath, ironically you need to get your blood really pumping which may help. Lemsip and w*** maybe? I hate it when I've had it, you try and drive and you're sat at a junction and trying to look left/right is absolute agony so you just sort of move in your seat and people look at you as if you're quite special.. Geo
ICE! Whack loads onto it. And keep icing it. Then the next thing is your going to love, or the wife will love. Get her to use her thumb and get her to push right into the muscle, this will should release the pressure of it. you might need to keep doing it. unitl it fully releases, then its got to be massaged

If you're not entirely sure of the problem you should not suggest advice which may potentially cause further risk. Massaging the area WILL NOT help this early in on the injury. You should start applying heat initially to the area (ice would have helped at the very start of the injury to lessen inflammation), and go get it diagnosed by a professional beforehand. I would love to tell you what the cause or area of concern may be, but frankly that would be juvenile and arrogant as i would not want to cause you anymore injury due to the discomfort you are describing. This kind of injury is common around the rotar cuff area. It may well even be somthing as simple as a trapped nerve - These can cause chronic pain in their own right. If it is this then massage can help and alleviate the pain, HOWEVER if it is not then you could cause yourself further injury to the torn muscle. My advice - Get off your injured @rse and go get yourself looked at by a qualified person(s).
caseys
stuff Didn't realise you should use a cold compress initially... that's my new learnt bit for the day I admit I don't know if it's a trapped nerve, but if it is definitely warm water helps, anything that increases the blood flow and relieves pressure on it. Trapped a nerve in my neck twice real horrible stuff Axle's right though, we're not medical professionals, go seek out the pros.
Axle
Didn't realise you should use a cold compress initially... that's my new learnt bit for the day Indeed. Ever notice when injured players leave a field the meds give them ice packs to localise the injury? Why you think that is? Heat generates more blood flow as you correctly point out, this is what is required once the injury is in 'healing' mode.
Rob
Get yourself to an osteopath if it continues. I had awful neck/shoulder pain and although it cost £35 an appointment, I didn't take another Ibuprofen after the first visit.
Gambit
Best thing to fix any pulled muscle or trapped nerve acquired in your sleep is go back to sleep. When your awake you're tense because you know it's there and moving aggravates it. Sleep is motionless relaxation.
Rob
I find if I relax too much when asleep, it becomes anything but "motion" less.
