Guest Jonny L Posted July 25, 2010 Share Posted July 25, 2010 Hi Guys, I am new to this forum and need advice on my Supra Twin Turbo UK Spec which I have owned for Just a couple of weeks. Having never owned or driven one of these cars before I have nothing to compare it to, and just want to make sure it is behaving as it should do. With the overdrive button switched off and traction control turned off, booting it from the lights it is pretty quick but the car seems to think for maybe a second before you seem to get any real power from the back wheels is this normal?? Also I am unable to get the rear wheels spinning in a straight line from a standing start. Also at certain speeds when wanting to really give it the beans I again seem to have this delay to get the car to drop down and the turbos spinning. Is this normal? With the above are you saying the car pulls away immediately but it takes a second before you feel the power come in? If so the slight hesitation will be the 1st turbo spooling up ie. turbo lag, it should start to pull hard from around 1800rpm when the 1st turbo starts to produce positive pressure, below that it will feel a little sluggish off the line. BOB B Posted July 25, 2010 Share Posted July 25, 2010 You should also hit number 2 turbo at around 4000 rpm and this is quite a noticable kick, a lot of people when they try the supra auto are prity pleased, it is a very good system. If you are poodling along at say 40 in o/d and you push your foot right to the floor (wide open throttle WOT), you will hit the kick down button (have a look on the floor under the accel peddle), your car should then pretty much fly it's a good feeling if you're BPU. Dnk Posted July 26, 2010 Share Posted July 26, 2010 (edited) Agree with all the above but also have a look at your ATF fluid in the gearbox, is it a nice clean pinky red colour ? If not drain the autobox fluid, drop the autobox sump, replace the filter and refill with new ATF Type IV. I've just done this and the box is as sharp as it ever was but you'll always have a bit of a delay with getting the power especially off a standing start, unless you power brake which you really dont want to do to be honest as you'll just cook the box eventually Edited July 26, 2010 by Dnk (see edit history) Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Terminator Posted July 26, 2010 Share Posted July 26, 2010 (edited) Welcome. All of what you describe sounds fluid related. You should be able to spin the wheels in first very quickly with in a few yards from standstill without power braking. Try the box in manual mode and do the changes yourself. I would check the fluid level first, there is a procedure for this and it must be done hot. Owners often don't check level correctly. If the fluid has the smell of burnt toast, it needs a change. There are three ways. First just a partial drain using drain plug and refill. Second significant drain as above but removing the box bottom pan. Third and best , total fluid change,( this is the only way to change all the fluid), is a procedure which involves pumping old fluid out and replacing with new, details are on the site somewhere. Fluid changes of any type should not be carried out too often as there can be excess depositing of fluid additives. Changes must be done with Toyota Type IV or equivalent. DEX III will cause significant problems, some Toyota dealers will recommend Dex III, run a mile and never let them touch your car.
