grahamc
Thanks Neil, I will ping you across the details later. On the expensive bike thing, I have always worked on the basis that sheer power is worth more than a small weight saving on a bike. I can probably make a £700 bike move almost as quickly as a £1,400 one and as I'm never going to be racing anybody I can probably 'make do' with a lesser bike. I just dont want to give up my raleigh as it fits perfectly, has never given me knee problems (where my mountain bike twinges my knee all the time) it handles exceptionally well and even with just 10 gears I have never had to get off and walk it up a mountain. The expensive bike makes all the differences over 200 miles... 1kg saving equates to amount of energy, blah blah blah. You got a frame size? Graham S
My mate has a road bike for sale, he usually spends silly money on bikes, his atb cost nearly 3k! He has a road bike that he may have used once being as he is a fat bugger.. I've seen it and it looks tasty and obviously like new but can't remember the specs but i'm sure he wanted dam little money for what it was.. Can find out if you like? I'll ring him now and see what it is and what he wants for it.. EDIT: Just called him, its a Trek 7.5 or something like that, he has used it the once. Paid £675 for it and would take £400 for it.. Think if i remember right its this one : http://www.trekbikes.com/us/en/bikes/road/fx/75fx/
neilp9876
I have a classic tommasini that I inherited from my late dad. Its gathering dust at the moment in the shed but its a very good bike. Heres a reference to it from when I tried to sell it earlier this year... http://www.retrobike.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?t=90614&highlight=tomassini I was looking for £400. Theres one on ebay at the moment to give an idea of what its worth... http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=140429251575&ssPageName=ADME:B:SS:GB:1123 Let me know if your interested? RedM
Slightly off topic but did anyone see that documentary on BBC4 last night. Some guy travelled the planet collecting part for his dream bike. Hand-built Rourke frame from UK, Campagnolo drive chain , brakes etc from Italy, Gravy rims from the US etc etc. In each place he visited he did some riding if possible. So Italy had a ride around Lake Como and to a shrine to the patron saint of Cycling. In the US he rode around Portland, a very bike friendly city and so. It really made me want to get back into cycling again but it also highlighted how cycle unfriendly this country is.
RedM
Branners, Did you get a bike in the end? If so, what did you go for? I'm wanting to get back into cycling but don't really know what a good bike is these days. One of the guys in the village has a Pinarello Sky Team Replica and it is chuffing gorgeous. It cost as much as a small car but he is a serious cyclist so I guess it does for him. I used to have a semi-bespoke Holdsworth back in my teens and early twenties. One day I stood on the pedals to start accelerating and the rear forks sheared off! It was fixed but never felt the same. One thing though. Cycling in one 30s and 40s. I hear there is a new phenomenon called the Mamil. Middle Aged Man In Lycra! Apparently blokes are buying flash bikes instead of flash cars. Anyhoo, if anyone has any bike recommendation between 300-1000 please let me know. Thanks.

They have a pinarello team replica in your budget albeit with a low end groupset. http://www.wiggle.co.uk/c/Road_Sale/33/Road_Bikes_-_Race/ Don't discount the Boardman bikes that halfords sell either, they are good bikes and review very well. A guy who has just started riding with us has bought one and it looks and rides nice. One thing i would do if i were you is book a proper bike fit once you have bought your bike, having not been on one in a while you want to be in a good position before you start. Shadow Beast
Depends on what sort of riding your planning on doing?? Road, Race (Time Trial) Sportives, commuting, If I were you defo go to your local bike shop and get a bike that fits, that will determine what style you can go for, they all have different frame geometry so if your planning on doing some mileage then you want be comfortable. Ones to look at for value for money are the Boardman series from halfords, varying prices in your range but again fit is key. Others to look for are Trek, Scott and Specialized they all have models in your range, you might be lucky and get a 2010 model as the 2011 are now coming out. If you search around you might be able to get a carbon fibre framed bike or at least a carbon composite one from giant in your range. Dont know if your local to me but there is a very good bike shop that i use, i have had 2 myself from him and recommended 2 others there as well and they have come away happy. Hope this helps Richie

RedM
Cheers fellas. There's plenty to think about there. As much as I love the look of the high-end Pinarello bikes they'll probably remain a distant dream. The Boardman bikes have always made me wonder. I know they get good reviews but I've always thought that there is a stigma attached to them. Y'know...when people look at them and you know they're thinking 'pah...Halfords bike'. I shall investigate further. I'll be looking at cycling and as alternative to running in a cross-training sort of way, probably on my own at first then as a social rider with a club perhaps. Off to do some more looking. Thanks again.

I shall investigate further. Thing is though they are just 'Halfords shite' I dont care what anyone says, i have been working on bikes for 15 years now and never have i had so many problems with bikes as i do with Halfrauds own brand, so much so i now will not accept a bike from there to be repaired in my shop. Forget the reviews as they are all biased, notice how they always say the same brand of bike is 'the best' yet speak to people who own said brand and most of the time they disagree. I could go on for hours about this but i just CBA.
Branners
Finally tracked down the model of my bike, it is a Raleigh Strada using Exage Sport FH-A450 chain and shifter set, Weinmann 9013-622/700c wheels and a biopace SIS and Exage sport shift mechanism. I still love the bike so I am going to try to get it resurected as I dont fancy £800 to buy a bike that is only the same weight and may not fit me as well as this one does. Just got to find some wheels and a chain now from one of those bikes.

Branners
So, I took my bike down to the new bike shop in the village, the guy took one look and said no problem, change of wheels and change of rear block and done. £109 in total for 2 new wheels, fix the chain, new rear block and labour. So, well chuffed the bike is back running now. Shame the weather has gone to pot. The place I took it is part of the Giant chain, it was Giant Radlett. Only been open a few weeks but great service. Neil-NA
Old bikes are well worth spending the money on. I have an old Woodrup in the shop that is having around £300 spent on it and thats labour free, they just dont make bikes these days like they used to lol.
