My shower Blew up today. Pics

This is fairly common on these models.

They get old and the seals perish or the plastic casing has a fracture in it as plastic becomes weak over the years through heat and moisture enters the unit.

As you can see from the pic its the neutral terminal thats burnt thats also typical.

The reason for this is that its a push fit connector onto the heater element and they are a steal post which starts to rust so the connection is very poor and you get serious amount of heat causing this. BUT this would have slowly started many months back.

Your fuse will more than likely be ok as the heat is only concentrated at that point so a larger load will not be vreated causing the fuse to trip. This will only happen when the shower is in use as the elements stay dead until the unit is operating.

Later units have started to use sprung screw stainless fittings to avoid this.

Also a poor connection further back in the circuit can also contribute but again probably not in this case but its worth getting someone to check it out.

You can buy a direct later model replacement for this if you dont want to alter any electrics, plumbing or tiles.

Also looking at the pic again the top screw holding the unit to the wall looks loose ? How high is the unit fitted in relation to the shower head?

Also why is the unit soaking wet on the inside and dry looking on the outside?

I see this all the time where units are fitted to low and water over time gets in anywhere.

The fitting instructions not to be fitted in direct contact with water. Meaning they are splash proof but only for a limited time and looking at the corrsion and rust in the unit its been getting damp for a while.

I Work for triton showers so if i can be of any help let me know as i deal with stuff like this on a daily basis. It would be good to see a further view of the unit fitted just incase it is too low and to save any future issues.

Jeez - glad nobody got hurt!

I read up some reviews when doing the Bathroom on my place - the consensus seemed to be Redring Showers were the most reliable so I went for a chrome one to match other chrome fittings from Screwfix:

http://www.screwfix.com/prods/63334/Bathrooms-Showers/Showers-Enclosures/Showers/Electric-Showers/Electric-Shower-Chrome-9-5kW

Comes with a 3-yr warranty and various safety features for £103 - it is 9.5kW though so you need 10mm wiring. I had the expensive wiring already (old school original shower wasn't connected when we first got the place as a repo so splashed out on the expensive cable with future plans in mind) so just needed an uprated RCD fuse for my trip switch style fuseboard.

I think all electric showers seem to have a limited lifespan of 2 or 3 years so I'd say a 3-yr warranty is important.

Cheers,

Brian.

Little update on this -

I was thinking to myself when on the crapper, that i should write an email and send it off to Triton Customer Services. So i wrote one last night, and low and behold i got an email and a phone call just after 9 this morning, so an Engineer is coming out to look at the Unit. So fingers crossed they replace it for FREE!!!
