Geo
Kinell. Could have been much worse though. Who fitted it? no idea bud, its been in since she moved in, so at least 4 years+ its been in, off to get another one tomorrow, got my sparky mate fitting in a uprated Fuse box, as its an old one thats it just now. Wow! Lucky escape there mate! I remember a while ago, my Sister's next door neighbours house almost completely burnt down when their shower caught fire! god mate. she was worried about our dog(Dalmation) rather than the house. it was lucky as she is trained through work to deal with fires but its still a shock when having to do it for real. kjgreen3
Make sure your sparky mate adheres to the current regulations regarding electrics. He will have to put everything on RCD protection including the lights, if your shower was on a split load (rcd protected) board it would have never have caught fire. Since you are getting a professional in it might as well be done right.

evinX
If the fuse didnt go, then it wasnt earthed then was it??? serious thing here for people to double check on.
Abz
WTF! Think I'll have a shower with a bucket of water after seeing that! Glad she's okay! My missus would have legged it!
Supranature
If you are buying the shower yourself make sure its not too powerful for your existing cabling. If you've only got 6mm cable you are limited to 8.5kW, if you've got 10mm cable, anything goes. Whatever has happened looks like a chain of errors/cirrcumstances, as already mentioned, a fuse should have blown before a fire got hold. Ricky49
Been an electrician I would be asking your sparky mate when he fits a new fuse board to make sure the shower has a rcd or rcbo protecting it. Looking at the pics it looks like there has been a direct short and if its the old rewireable fuses you have they can take upto 3x as much fault current before they blow which usually results in your cable setting on fire What is the current loading of the shower and do you know the size of cable installed. Any shower installed nowadays should be supplied by a 10mm cable even if its a low current model. Could of been much worse.
Ricky49
If the fuse didnt go, then it wasnt earthed then was it??? serious thing here for people to double check on. Not if its a rewireable fuse these are bad news if still in installed in homes. I have been to house fires caused by rewireable fuses not blowing and the cable setting on fire behind the plastered walls. When all tests were carried out the earth connection was fine its just the protective device is not suitable for the job.
Rob
I couldn't help thinking of Roy, from the IT Crowd. "A fire? In a shower?"
BazzaAlpine
Something like this almost happened to me once. I smelt something getting hot and the plastic turning brown so lept out the shower and turned it off. Opened it up to have a look and it was a dirty solder joint, that was it. Re-did the joint properly and it was fine. Glad your other half was okay, water and bare electrics never a good combo.
SupraStar 3000
Not the first time you've been blown in the shower hey Geo Thats pretty scary actually. Glad no body was hurt.
Havard
The temptation to point the shower head at the electrical fire must have been overwhelming, that while you are stood in puddle of water is never a good thing...... Glad everyone is ok. H.
