Gatso`d the wrong way?

Truvelo cameras do not flash and take the picture from the front.

If a Gatso camera flashes you from the front its an empty box, so no worries.

If you look at the back of a Gatso camera you will see two circular holes in each top corner. If they have a grey or blank plate behind them the box is empty. If there are two locks then there is a camera inside, but this is still no indicator as to wether the camera has film in. If you are in London you have about a 1 in 8 chance of being caught if you set a camera off.

dunno whether this is true or not but i was once told that the police would not sent pictures, used by the Police inforcement cameras, of the front of the car as they don't want to be involved in married disbutes i.e. if the mistress is in the passenger seat !??!

I borrowed the boss Merc once and got flashed head on from a camera on the otherside of the road. Shat myself for weeks, touch wood he hasn't mentioned it anything.

I always used to try to set them off, it uses up the film. Although I did get several police drive-bys and stops outside my house. Connected? Don't know but it's possible they had my number plate from the unenforcable pictures.

Question for Class One;

How do police forces justify using hidden traps and then a pack of police vehcles to pick up the people caught by said trap?

The situation was; 2 rubber tubes on the road (which detect speed). Police car parked 300m away in a layby hidden by trees from the road. Police bikes and cars stationed at the next junction (I got a nice enough biker). I got pulled over 3points £60 fine...no discussion no interest just give us your money.

I asked the officer in a round about way how their operation was a deterent and in the interests of safety/the community you serve...and he agreed in a round about way that they were just revenue generating and it was the Acle Police Chief's idea...which made me think he didn't actively support the operation but was "doing his job".

This speed trap was just after a junction in a 50 zone which is dualled and become 70mph 200m further on. I was caught and I was speeding, so fair enough, but how can they say it's in the interests of the community/safety IF nobody (that didn't get pulled) didn't know they were there?? At least with a safety camera (van or fixed unit) I'm happy that a) I've got a chance to correct my indiscretion over the speed limit (I'd checked the junction was clear and rolled on the speed as I approached the national sign - crossed the tubes at 71mph oops) and b) it's probably there cause they've had some accidents there.

1) If it's so dangerous - why no fixed camera - it's the best solution and I'd wholely support the move as I can see idiots crashing there.

2) If it's so dangerous, why hide the police presence?

3) Is there any way I can complain about the tactics as I don't feel it served any purpose but to impact and victimise me?

4) The officer can't have been to interested in busting my balls as he completely ignored my missing number plate even though that meant he had to walk around the car to get the reg lol - some of you are ok ;)

5) How is this supposed to give us confidence that our police force gives a sh1t about what's plastered down the side of their own cars? "Serving the Community"

6) Are there any other sneaky ways the police are employing...I for 1 wasn't aware of the 2 tubes strung across the road system.

Cheers

It was Dartford actually, there are no speed cameras in North Yorks at all. :woot:

Mind you, I did used to tearass round the town as well, so maybe it was a public complaint, but I definitely had an unusual amount of police attention at the time, although they never stopped me whilst driving in town.

Right the speed trap.

The "two tubes across the road" speed trap have been around for at least 20 odd years. They're not very common these days as they require a lot of resources. Sounds like that trap was sighted there because its either an accident blackspot (can I say that these days lol) or a number of complaints have been received about speeding drivers at a given location.

A common misconception about fixed cameras is that they are put in by Police. The local authority actually pays for them and consults the Police on where is the best place to sight them. These camera cost an absolute fortune to purchase, so some local authorities direct their limited budgets elsewhere. Granted some of them are out and out revenue collectors. Others are placed in a spot where there has either been a fatal accident or near to where there has been one, or its a placed for a matter of safety.

Not all forces participate in the Road Safety Camera Partnership.Again they cost a lot of money to operate, but some forces can offset this cost by regaining some of the revenue generated by the cameras.

The government, are trying to emphasise that speeding is an offence. 99% of drivers speed at one time or another and by some is seen as socially acceptable. Some older members will remember that 30-40 years ago, everyone drunk drived (sic) and was seen by some people as socially acceptable. Now, drink driving is seen as socially reprehensable and the Government is trying to acheive that goal with speeding. The difference, is that soemone is making a shitload of money out of generally law abiding citizens, and some quite rightly see this as yet another stealth tax.

Alex, I hope that goes some way to answering some of your questions.
