Ok, now Im not an idiot when it comes to computers, I work in IT, so I'm quite quick at learning software. I used to fix accountancy software when it broke... so... how does a company like Apple make such a great phone!!!!.... that is so so well thought out and worked through, so very very user friendly, and then connect it to such a pile of stinking rubbish as iTunes... (please dont think im anti apple, WMP sucks as well)

I cannot for the life of me put custom ringtons onto my phone, iTunes just will NOT sync them what ever I do... even going through DOS to re-name the file extension to .m4r and then dragging that file across, still will not sync...

I didnt like iTunes before, now I'm made to use it I grudgingly I do... and now I remember why I hated it in the first place!!! grr :aggress:

[/rant]

Any help available?

Hehe, it's apple at it's best here! Basically they want you to buy them!

I got around this on my mac by using a programme called Garageband to edit a song to be 20 seconds (I think) or shorter and then sending it back to iTunes, mac does all the work renaming etc etc

Top and bottom of it all is basically the track has to be cut to a 20 second or less loop before it will be allowed to be seen as a ringtone

Hmm, should work then.... strange that is, if you want you can email me the track, i'll bang it through garageband and email it back if you want?

Cheers buddy, but I dont think that would help as its already a valid ringtone file, the windows file icon has changed too a ringtone file too.. just iTunes wont recognise it...:search:

Hmm, strange one that matey, I know I have to transfer a ringtone to iTunes from Garageband stating it is going back as a ringtone (probs just for the file extension) but what you have done should defs work!

Best of luck with it though, bet it ends up being something simple

renaming in windows for some reason doesn't change the file extension...
Call yourself IT literate! :D

Have you got "Hide Extensions For Known file Types" turned off in Folder Options - View settings? (exact wording varies slightly between windows versions)

You work in IT and you have an iPhone? You must be an idiot to buy something made by Apple :D

Hehe just kidding, just not a fan of Apple products... no idea how to help you, my misses has an iPhone and she's always having problems syncing stuff. She plugged her iPhone into another laptop too to charge it and it wiped all her tunes off, probably something she hadn't set right, but all she did was plug it in, hardly user friendly.

The fact that you have to use iTunes to put stuff on the device in the first place is rather backwards. Anyway, I will quit hijacking your thread with my Apple moanings.... hope you get it sorted bud.

Cause renaming in windows for some reason doesn't change the file extension...

Lol, you think that just changing an extension changes the way the file is put together? as in a MP3 and M4r file?

Oh dear.

Save MP3 no longer than 40 seconds

Covert to AAC in itunes

Open in media player

Save as other type and save as m4r

drag into iTunes

Works ok for me.

Yeah, changing the file extension doesn't change the format of the file. You have to do that in another program.

I haven't bothered with ring tones, as I'd be there for days making them, and deciding who has what tone just would take up for too much of my time!

How to create custom ringtones for iPhone using iTunes

The following steps show how to create free ringtones for your iPhone using only iTunes and songs you already have on your computer.

To make iPhone ringtones using only iTunes:

1. Right click on the song you are going to make into a ringer and select "Get Info".

2. Go to the "Options" tab and go down to the "Start Time" and "Stop Time" check boxes. Check both boxes and input the time you want your ringer to start/stop. The ringer has to be 30 seconds or less. Click "OK" when you're done.

3. Right click on your newly "clipped" song and select "Convert Selection to AAC". The song will be re-encoded using the start and stop times determined (If your menu item does not read "Convert Selection to AAC" and reads "Convert Slection to MP3" (or some other format) please go to iTunes -> Preferences -> Advanced -> Importing and change the "Import Using" drop down menu to "AAC Encoder").

4. After the song is done encoding navigate to your iTunes Music folder, locate your song, and drag it to your desktop. After the song is on your desktop go back to iTunes and delete the clipped version from you iTunes library (It won't delete it from your desktop, it will only remove it from iTunes).

5. Go back the song on your desktop and right click on your song and chose "Properties". Go to the name and extension section and change the extension from .m4a to .m4r (or you can just change the extension right from your desktop).

6. After the extension is changed simply double click on the file to add it to your iTunes library under the ringtones section. Sync your phone with iTunes and you're done!

Note: Remember to go back into iTunes and uncheck your custom start and stop times for the original version of your song.

Yeah I know that simply renaming the file doesnt change the way that it works, but following the tutorials it only says that you need to rename it, not change the file... probs a blond moment on my part there, cause that would make sense as to why iTunes doesnt recognise it.

Yeah Iv seen this tutorial, which is helpful, but I already have the file that I want, which is 14 seconds long, just iTunes wont recognise it...

In saying that, I think Ric may have answered that question for me;) ...

iTunes is tottaly gash, but, having said that, I'm not computer geek, but I've managed to do it! :D

Shush :p
