Havard
Mercedes SL500 http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/1873624.htm My only worry is the build quality. Didn't they go really crap between 2000 and 2006 etc. Opinions would be appreciated. H.

Martin J
That SL 55 is a lovely machine The SL 500 is also a nice car, especially in that black. As said, a load of car for that money, didn't realise they were were available for this now.
Abz
They are not bad cars at all, drive pretty well and are fairly solid. Parts are a bit expensive when they go wrong but if you can avoid going main dealers than you will be alright. My friend has one which he has put a custom straight through exhaust, the sound is amazing!!! http://www.autoexpress.co.uk/carreviews/firstdrives/67278/mercedes_sl500.html
Bobbeh
Didn't realise they go so cheap! I bet servicing and running costs are quite high though.
Havard
Lot of car for the money isn't it. Still not found that big single of your dreams yet? I have been looking for a VVTi for about 3 months and getting sick of looking now. The M3 was looking favourite a week or so ago and then I saw this. There is someone viewing it tonight though. If it's still available tomorrow then I'll have a trip down and get the cheque book out.... You only live once... H.

Very classy cars though!
paulrenn
AMG one is really nice...but the 500 is also great. I had the "new" SLK from same era (2006 model I think it was), it was very well built. I think you won't be dissapointed with the SL.

johnny g
I might have an SL55 engine for sale soon - still deciding what to do with it. I think it's too wide for the Supra
Axle
The build on them is not as bad as made out. Infact they are extremely solid. They did used to suffer with faulty roof motors, which was one of the biggest problems with the earlier models. Not a cheap fix, so check to see if rectified. Havard
They seem to go 'hand-in-hand'! I did think it would be an ideal car to go dogging in. H.

Thorin
Very nice cars, I'm looking at possibly getting an SL55. They appear to be actually quite reliable and servicing costs not too bad. It's a big old unsophisticated V8, that appears to be pretty bullet proof (both in the 500 and 55). The did suffer from problems with leaky roofs early on, but any with that problem will have more than likely already had that sorted now. One of the more expensive items to fix is apparently the fancy electronic suspension, which I presume will be the same on the 500 as well. DannoSupra
We just bought a Black SL500 Paul. Its a nice car to drive. Doesn't go as well as i thought it would. But roof down, just cruising about its cool
j_jza80
My dad had one of these from new, I got to drive it a few times. They're pretty well put together, he didn't have many problems with his. Although they are fast, they're pretty boring to drive, everything just seems very remote/removed. He replaced it with the current Jag XKR, which was a far superior car in almost every respect.
