Ceptik
Im very new to the supra scene (2 days actually) and im trying to find the VIN details of my car. What looks like there should be a plate on the driver's side wing...there isn't!!! There is, however the number along the back of the engine bay reading JZA800-0**** etc. Is this it? Please help! Need the details tonight if possible!!
Terminator
That will be the car identification number, but you should have a plate the size of a credit card, on the OS inner wing behind the strut mount.
lovatt
should be a silver plate on the inner wing but yes the chassis number is also on the bulk head
Ceptik
Thanks guys. Just looking through some MOTs and it also has it on there. Looks like the VIN plate has been drilled out! Thats not good! Not good at all!!!!! Think im going to have words with the guy tomorrow! Has this happened to anyone else before?
lovatt
may have been taken off due to accident repair, replacement VIN plates are ultra expensive

Not good at all!!!!! Think im going to have words with the guy tomorrow! Has this happened to anyone else before? When I was looking for a supra, I came across a Black 6 Sp manual hardtop that had a Silver plate off a RED AUTO AEROTOP...., I informed the seller of this who was shocked - a few weeks later I came across the company who imported that car into the country.....they had actually received a call from the concerned seller, .....the seller had actually sold the car two days after id seen it. .... OK, there should be a SILVER PLATE on the Drivers side of the Engine bay as stated. The Chassis number on that plate SHOULD correspond to the JZA80 number that you see on the bulkhead (make sure that this hasnt been painted on, etc) If your SILVER plate is missing, then there could be a possiblity that YOUR cars identity has been stolen and is on another car right now (CLONING), in which case you will have all sorts of problems with Road TAX renewals, insurance, etc. worrying thing is that even a HPI check wouldnt have helped you here.... from personal experience, better to get ANY car RAC checked (or professionally checked - people who know what to look for)....cause atleast they are supposed to be thorough. Ceptik
oh god no, please no! i need to get tax for it because there isn't any yet! I think ive got a wrong one here. god, what am i going to do?
CJ
Did you buy it through a trade outlet or a private seller? Did you pay cash or is it on finance? If it is a trade source, then speak to them and ask them if they know of any reason for the missing plate.
Ceptik
It was trade and i paid the difference by CC. They wanted cash but i objected. I will call the guy tomorrow morning and 'have a few words'. I still remember where i got it from so if they play innocent i may have to take a little trip up there
imi
oh god no, please no! i need to get tax for it because there isn't any yet! I think ive got a wrong one here. god, what am i going to do? get the chassis number off the bulkhead. (sometimes they also tamper with the number on the bulkhead...paint over it, etc) do a HPI check on the car straight away...and confirm that the chassis number on DVLA's record matches the one on your bulkhead. also check to see whether it tally's up with the numbers on past MOT certs. for TAX all you need is the previous MOT certs, valid insurance cert.....thats it. get your car taxed first and then worry about getting a new silver plate for the car from toyota. unfortunately car identity crime is very common....I hope things work out for you. if the police get involved (which VOSA will)...then your car could be offroad for months until they complete their investigation. MichaelG
Regardless of who you bought it from........some previous owner has been up to no good. I would be getting in contact with DVLA as soon as possible and seek their advice. Hope its all a simple problem to sort out.

NO....I wouldnt advise doing this yet...DVLA are a bunch of incompetent muppets. take it up with the traders...get your money back if they cant sort out a new plate and GET THEM TO TAX IT FOR YOU AND PROVE THE IDENTITY OF THE VEHICLE..... absz
just incase you do have to get hold of a chassis plate. theres a company called tags direct which will make you one. all you need is log book and £55. . toyotas will not help you in replacement vin tags. Ceptik
Some great advice there. Just flicking through the old MOTs and service certs and have noticed the MOTs are the same number as the bulkhead up to nov 04. Now the service cert date nov 17th 2004 has a different VIN/chassis number beginning KZN130 *******. Odd. What number could this be? ...Hold on...that service cert is for a different car!!! He's given me the wrong one! It says the colour is green..instead of silver! OK, NOW im getting angry!!!

Ceptik
ok. Sounds like these traders are a little bit suspicious! God, all i wanted was a nice last car before a hefty mortgage and marriage. Something i can have a bit of fun in then sell it when i move. Why is life so unfair?!
CJ
Is this a car forecourt site or a home trader type scenario?
Ceptik
Home trader. They had quite a few different cars on display including nearly new M5 and a skyline r33.
imi
Why is life so unfair?! Ceptik.....unfortunately the world is full of scum....and it is OUR responsibility to educate ourselves in order to overcome such situations.....YES, it is unfair as how the hell can one expect us punters to be clued up on all their tricks...its the reason why I suggested that you take someone knowledgeable along with you to do these checks. just let it be known that MOT certs, service records, etc can all be forged, you need to get them to prove that the identity of the car is Valid AND THAT THERE ISNT ANOTHER CLONE ON THE STREETS. Get them to TAX the car, and replace the VIN plate...otherwise threaten legal action (and be quick to stop the payments)....play it cool at first......good luck
