hey guys,

Im 21, and im an auto mechanic from Sydney, Australia and i am thinking about moving to the uk In march/april Next year to be closer to some family and experience living/working in another country.

Just wondering whats the chances of getting a job at a Dealer or a general performance shop in Greater london? Ive worked at Subaru for the past 4 years but i love anything japanese and since i own a facelift Twin turbo supra.

As far as i can see the only problem for me moving to uk, getting a working visa is actually finding a job related to cars.

You could try applying to subaru's uk garages or any other main dealer if your in need of work desperatley. toyota, ford etc just find out where you want to stay in the uk and maybe some of us can find the garage details online for you to send a CV and application form too.

I can give you a job and accomodation, basically, you can live at the back of my garage and then you can do all the work on my cars saving me the hassle, in return I'll get the misses to make up an extra plate of food each day so you dont die....

Hows that sound ? :p

lol

I did it the other way.... best decision I ever made. I'm not a huge fan of the uk. I would rather try somewhere random, like china or something like that if I was to do it again.

and I will look after ya supra whilst ya gone! where are you now?

nobody is ever happy with where they are from.

Dont get me wrong, i love australia, but as a temporary thing id like to try working in another country. i feel as if i have to "get away" from sydney for a few years.

Excellent, I can wheel you out on hot days attached to the BBQ, it'll impress my friends when they see a true Ozzy cooking over the BBQ, you lot are good with that shit :D

But seriously, I wouldnt listen to this lot. Dont do it because of the recession, if its because of the recession then no one dare go for any job, sure the whole economy is a bit stunted, but there is still jobs out there, and if you're good at your job and can back things up maybe with some good references etc, then I reckon you'll find work.

Compared to Oz, everywhere in the UK is close to London lol. Be Jamie Ps live in technician :D

Well according to tinterweb, its 10562 miles between the UK and Oz, usually I charge 40p a mile with no car on and then 90p a mile when the car is on, so based on that, but as its long distance I'll give you a reduced rate of 30p without and 80p with, so....

10562 x .30 = 3168

+

10562 x .80 = 8449

= £11,617 :D But because Im a nice guy, I'll give you a first time introductory Ozzy offer of 50% off, so we'll call it £5,500, sound ok lol :D

Her cooking it quite good actually, the best female I have had yet for cooking, her tidyness is shocking though, she lives out of a floordrobe ;)

He could probably afford it ;)

If you want my advice, get the Tier 5 visa (if you genuinely think you won't want to stay more than 2 years) - it's cheap, will allow 24 months work, and you won't be required to have a job before entering the country (it's the new take on the "working holiday" visa).

Don't even think about bringing the Supe over if you're not going to be here long term ;)

If you enjoy sh*t weather, expensive fuel, high cost of living and a naff government then go for it, you won't look back :D

On a serious note, you could start applying now from overseas... a quick browse on the web will find you all the local garage's in your area. Although the motor trade isn't at its best at the moment, I'm sure someone in the area you plan to stay would welcome an experienced mechanic as a temporary thing.

Hey I'll swap places with you if you like.... I'll take your place in Sydney and you can come and live by Birmingham and have my IT job :D

I don't know if there are any dealing with the motor trade, but there were a number of temp agencies for the health professions when I came over in 2009 - I used JustPhysio, for example, and they helped me with organising all the paperwork (visas and professional accreditation, medical and police checks etc) and found me a job very easily.

Perhaps something similar would be worth looking into?

Alternatively, if you have relatives here then staying with them would solve a few accommodation issues. They might also be able to network for you for jobs.
