Jellybean
What tools do you need to do a Gearbox, Diff, and Oil change? thanks
Scott
Decent socket set will do you. You will need an allen key for the diff or the gearbox (I can't remember, might be both). The oil filter can be a pain if it is on tight, a screwdriver plunged through it can do the trick but it is messy.

Thanks, have a K&N Oil filter so it has a nut on the end I did the gearbox and Diff before but it was some star allen key type, I was using somebody elses tools just wondering what the tool is called
Scott
It was just a regular allen key on mine. I think you are refering to a torx key? I don't recall any of those being required for a fluid change. Might be wrong on the TRD though

I don't recall any of those being required for a fluid change. Might be wrong on the TRD though I say everything else is standard TT, who knows but Torx key does look like it. It was an attachment I used on a Torque wrench, and definetly not an Allen key end. Looks very like a Torx Key, it was the same on Gearbox and Diff Just out of Curiosity are the Magnetic oil Sump plugs worth getting?
Scott
Are the stock ones not magnetic? I replaced mine with a stock one as I assumed it was.
Scott
Just done a search, it is definitely a hex key on the side of the gearbox. As standard anyway Edit: Hex key on the diff as standard too Linky

Chris Wilson
Manual box has a 17mm external hex size filler plug (male hex) Diff has an Allen female socket level and drain plug, 12 mm from memory, but check before buying.

Jellybean
Sorry to bring up an old thread but can anybody recommend a toolset for doing a diff change
Swampy442
A really strong 10mm allen key bit and a long bar, they can be really tight. Its fill to spill so bottom plug in, top one out and use a pump of some sort to fill it. Easy as that.

Scott
Did you mean change the diff or just the diff oil?

snake
just make sure you undo the filler plug first
Herb
maybe a stupid question for some of you... BUT does the diff have to be dismounted from the car or can the oil also be changed on a mounted diff? regards, Herbert
Scott
Change is done in-situ.
Chris Wilson
Easier than an engine oil filter change, given you have the correct sizes Allen key. Clean and simple job. Only caveat is having the means to squirt oil upwards into the diff housing. Flexi bottles of oil are your friend.

I was looking everywhere for something in order to squirt the oil in, I eventually managed to find some bottles in work that we use to squirt coolant manually. Then, the day came... I opened my bottle of diff oil and low and behold it had a bloody pull out bit on the end lol.
