Whitesupraboy2
Well im after advice from people who might of had similar happen to them; Bought some Sofas from a company online (spoke to them and all that before to confirm they could get stock) so now call up and their partner company says they have been liquidated. I paid via effectively Paypal... they had a paypal checkout. So went to bank and wasnt taken out against debit card but against bank account itself so they say im not covered anyway. registering with administrators....ill be bottom of the pile Paypal dispute opened but havent a clue if ill get it. Whats weird is I only eventually managed to get hold of the partner company, by looking at the paypal payment address and saw different company name (the partner company) so googled and called them, im kind of hoping the paypal address is kept live so i have a chance of a refund. Anymore advice from anyone, or am i £700 down
Abz
I thought using paypal automatically covers you up to £500?
Whitesupraboy2
I thought using paypal automatically covers you up to £500? but does that rely on money being in their paypal account??

stevie_b
IIRC Paypal is as much use as a limp sweaty handshake when used outside of ebay. I don't think it gives you any protection unless the other party want to co-operate, in which case you could probably do it without paypal anyway. I remember reading something about this on the web recently (ineffectiveness of paypal protection outside of ebay) but can't find the link. Too late in this case but I think debit card and bank account give you the same amount of protection, i.e. none. To get a decent level of protection you'd need to pay by credit card, then you're covered (at least for a short time) by Section 75 of the Consumer Credit Act. If you pay using paypal but the funds are taken from your credit card then I think the cc company will say the payment between them and paypal was legit and fine so they can't help you out. So sounds like Paypal my best bet, thats something!! And on plus side I ordered as 2 paypal payments of £250 and £450 so may get it all back...well fingers crossed!! stevie_b
As mawby said: if possible I wouldn't use paypal at all, either funded from a credit card or a debit card. I know some companies only accept paypal though, probably because it keeps their costs down. Credit card charges for retailers can be eye-watering. Direct payment by credit card FTW. As for your sofa, if you've lodged your claim with the administrators and raised it with paypal, I think you've done all you can.
Whitesupraboy2
Just a small update when i called administrators. They said company hasnt gone into liquidation yet it will be on the 22nd and the director had provided a list of names and people who will not be recieving their goods for the administrators to write too. My name wasnt on the list, nor my price of product, nor address. So she said give it the week till the 22nd and theres a good chance ill get my goods, if not call them back. So fingers crossed!! Matt H
What company was it? I've always been warey of Pay Pal's loose promise of protection. You're in an odd situation though, as it's not like there's a scam or rip off involved - everything's above board.
Whitesupraboy2
the people who have gone under are 'Your department Store' http://www.yourdepartmentstore.co.uk/ However they have 4 / 5 other names although effectively all same company. the one I went through was http://www.furniturexl.co.uk/
Matt H
I've never heard of them before. On a side note, how come you bought a sofa online? Was it not important to see how comfy it / they were?

Was it not important to see how comfy it / they were? Went on holiday beginning of the year and we liked sofa's so much at time. I took a picture of the label so could get same make / range of sofa. Found them online on few places and ordered with the ones that said they could deliver soon.
michael
A similar thing happened to me years ago but I paid cash - company went bust and they basically opened the doors to the shop at a set time and invited people in to haggle over display items, fixtures, fittings etc to the value of your deposit. I got a £500 rug I didn't want but there wasn't much else worth having. One chap was trying to take their computers and telephones Good luck. My policy with sofas now is that I only buy items that are in stock and available to be taken away or delivered the next day, credit card payment is a must too. Ah that old chestnut. That means open a paypal dispute and explain everything. You are entitled to cancel your order under the distance and selling regs. I will be very surprised if you get your sofa
