Copying VHS to DVD

Has anyone made any progress in finding high street places that'll copy VHS to DVD? Ideally somewhere in or around Leeds.

I've got hours of gig footage on VHS and little camcorder tapes that I need putting on disc.

Is this likely to be expensive and thus necessitate the purchase of yet another gadget?

I found a place that worked out at an cool £30 per hour of recording for thirty hours worth IIRR. Bloody eck. I think I saved the link if you want it.

What do you reckon to these so called media banks or whatever ?

Will one of them work ?

Why do you not do it yourself via your computer/ laptop? It is very simple to do, there are many guides online to help.

I can't play the camcorder tapes as I don't have a camcorder!

Some of the footage is on VHS but our VCR is so shite I'd hate to use it as the master source or whatever the terminology is.

Ewen, that's pretty expensive. I'm going to ring around a few places, get some quotes and that.

My dad did this years ago, we had the vhs and we went out and bought a recordable dvd player, split scart lead, linked both to the same channel, played the vhs and hit record on the dvd iirc, was a big thing for us back then, dvds:D but it worked!

I've got a DVD/HDD recorder and borrowed a VHS recorder/player off the old girl next door, haven't tried it yet but should work OK.

My main issue was that most places send the tapes away and the footage I want on disc is not replaceable so i'd prefer to transfer them myself.

Its easy enough to do it yourself and there are plenty of options available too from cheap USB capture cards upto production quality.

If you are doing this on a windows box I would recommend the MS Media Encoder, it use to be free and still looks like there is a free versions available http://www.microsoft.com/expression/products/Encoder4_Overview.aspx
